I've lived at One Longfellow Place and 8 Whittier Place. Without hesitation I receommend Longfellow. The building is newer and taller, the apartments are larger, it's more convenient to shops/restaurants, and they offer a swimming pool on site. Another MAJOR plus is that you have 100% control of your apartments temperature. Longfellow has all electric appliances and you pay ALL utilities yourself.
Though the units are also nice at Whittier Place (a mix of apartments and condos)...and my unit directly over looked the river, it also directly over looked Storrow Drive/Leverett Circle and the on-ramp to the expressway. Lot's of traffic. This wasn't a problem until spring and fall when the building refuses to convert the heating system to cooling and you are stuck with leaving windows open for months at a time, resulting in more pollen and black soot in the apartment than outside. If you like to control the temperature and sound of your environment, then Whittier Place is not for you. At Whittier Place, gas is included in rent for cooking. In addition, your heating/cooling is included, except you pay the electric for the fan to operate.
However, both buildings are built soundly so you can't hear your neighbors.
I reccomend Longfellow Place over Whittier Place.
