I'm writing this review about a year after moving out of a Copley property after being reminded of them by a friend this evening. We lived at 100 Jersey Street. The building itself was nice... hard wood floors, showers with opaqued glass, etc. Many of the tenants, were working professionals or medical/dental residents such as ourselves.
I had read some poor reviews about Copley previously, but figured that only the happiest and most upset tenants would ever post. At this time, I have been removed from the situation for quite a while, and am not posting out of emotion, but in an attempt to help others not make the same costly mistakes as my roommate and I did.
For some reason, if you take a look at police archives, you will see that every couple of years, there are several break-ins on Copley properties in Fenway... when I say several, I don't mean one or two. We are talking about ten-fifteen per week. This cycle happens every couple of years, just infrequently enough for those of us who are looking only looking for accomodations for a few years. Last year, was one such year.
Don't get me wrong, I have lived in some of the largest urban centers in the world and know that break-ins are a part of city living, especially with Roxbury just across the park. However, neither having a landlord that does not alert its residents about a rash of break-ins in the neighborhood, having workers who prop doors open while doing maintenance work, allowing the fact that a master key had been stolen from their office by a suspected former super-intendent to remain "secret", nor hiring a new super who was constantly intoxicated and charged with DUI upon investigation by residents, should be part of any tenant experience. I won't even go into how David Pirog came to tell us that it was our fault we didn't have renters insurance. When residents proposed measures to increase safety, such as having the buzzer numbers NOT correspond to suite numbers, we were thoroughly dismissed.
Our apartment was broken into, my co-resident's apartment was broken into weeks later. To top it off, the reason this topic has been revisited... my friend's place got broken into just the other day.
To summarize, it is a combination of the neighborhood and Copley's lack of concern for the safety of its residents that should keep you away. It is tempting to live so close to Fenway Park, Shaws, AMC, Landsdowne, Brigham, the Fens, and a quick walk to Newbury. However, if you care about your possessions and personal safety, I strongly urge you to consider another area and management company in Boston. Otherwise, renter's insurance is a no-brainer.
As two very well-educated health care professionals, we hope you won't make the same mistake that we did. Good luck in your search!
