Small apartments, dated common areas, fire alarms

I lived at the Devonshire for one year. I've lived in other Boston luxury buildings (Longfellow Place, Greenhouse, Whittier Place) so I am familiar with this "style" of living.
The Devonshire is located in downtown Boston - a few blocks from Faneuil Hall and Downtown Crossing. The first 8 floors are offices and the remaining floors are apartments, with a gym/pool on the top floors.
My unit faced Devonshire Street (the other side faces Washington Street). It was a one-bedroom with balcony. This unit was MUCH smaller than the other units I've lived in.
The kitchen was a bit outdated with what appeared to be the original (dating from the early/mid 80's) appliances. The closet space was decent.
My two biggest gripes with the building were the temperature control and common areas. The heating/cooling system was controlled by management. As a result, when it is a hot spring day in April or May, the building is still set for heat. You can not get cooling until the building switches over (usually after Memorial Day/June first). We faced southeast and our apartment got SO HOT (there were no blinds to the balcony so the sun just came in and heated the place up).
As for the common areas, I felt like I lived on the set of Moonlighting (tv show). The elevator lobby had these ribbed wood panels (with lots of knicks and scrapes). And the common hallways on each floor were incredibly long with awful carpet and walls. My floor was all brown. They were very dingy looking for a luxury building.
Also, there were numerous fire alarms while I lived there. With 10 years of hi-rise apartment living in other Boston buildings, I never had to go through false alarms...yet this happened countless times at the Devonshire.
Some conveniences of the Devonshire are that there are laundry machines on each floor and the location can be convenient if you work downtown. However, at night there is NO activity. This part of the city it literally abandoned after 8PM and can be creepy. There is a home for homeless veterans practically across the street. The few people who do venture down the streets late at night are returning to their cars after getting drunk at the clubs at Faneuil Hall. Frequent yelling and brawls occured on the street below.
All in all, I didn't think it was worth the money spent. You can get a more modern apartment nearly twice the size and for the same price at Charles River Park.
