St. Germain an excellent apartment, minor drawbacks

My apartment on St. Germain Street was overall fabulous. Living there for three years, I greatly enjoyed the central location, fireplace, quietness, and nice exposed brick. The street is gorgeous and all neighbors (but one) were great people that I got to know.

There are a few drawbacks, but few. On street parking is a crapshoot. Waits up to 2 hours happened, so I designed moving my car around my perception of future parking availability (factoring in the symphony, ballpark games, and Berklee events). Rats are present, as you're in the middle of the city. My main problem was that, as I was in the end apartment nearest Massachusetts Avenue, I had drug deals, spray painted walls, passed out bums, and illegally parked (blocking) cars every week. Management was not responsive because these things are all understandably outside their control. 911 became a number used on my speed dial.

Maintenance was excellent; my kitchen and bathroom were remodeled during my stay. Management did a good job with it, although I wish they had admitted that it would take three weeks rather than four days, as originally stated.

Oh yea, the fireplace. They are wonderful and I had some great times with it. However, the flue is tricky and one must be careful not to have smoke enter the apartment and set off the (smoke) fire alarm. This also presented a big problem when cooking, since the kitchen did not have a flue venting smoke to the outside. So much for broiling honey-encrusted salmon in the (admittedly new) oven.

I was locked out once. Guy came in 20 minutes, which was great in the winter. I wish he had IDd me though, which made me nervous. Cost $50.

Moving in and out is a nightmare. Parking on the street is impossible, and working with the city to get No Parking signage required my posting a bond.

Ok, so I've said some negative things. God I loved the look, feel, and location.
