I can?t wait to move out of this hole...

Unless you are on a serious budget, don?t bother. When I moved in, the place was hands-down cheaper than anyone else by a few hundred dollars. My first rent increase was a modest 5%, which I didn?t mind, but the next year was closer to an additional 10%, which was ludicrous. This time around, it's another 6%. Given how the economy has gone downhill, I have a hard time justifying a 20% increase over 3 years when nobody I know has gotten a raise, and there have been really no improvements made. The only new things in my building are the mailboxes and intercom system (which was very badly wired and I had to fix myself). The appliances come from a day long past (fridge isn?t even frost-free) and there is no outlet in the bathroom.
My car was broken into twice when I first moved in, but there have been no other incidents since then that I?ve been aware of.
There are three sets of washers and dryers, at least one of which is broken at any given time. It?s also impossible to do laundry at any other time than the day, since everyone does laundry starting at 3p-10:30p...rules state no 24 hour laundry.
The kids make too much noise in the hallways at times...but you can?t blame them since the playground is laughable at best. Short of my stereo-happy upstairs neighbor, the place is quiet.
Maintainence is a nightmare. A pipe broke on an upstairs apartment and caved in my bathroom ceiling while I was on vacation. The pipe was fixed, but I decided to forgo complaining and just replaced the drop ceiling tiles myself. There seems to be some water issue in my building as it seems that once or twice a month there?s an emergency shut-off notice.
The interiors are kept clean, but the hall rugs should have been replaced 20 years ago, and the brown wallpaper, pink paint needs to go. Interior lighting is weak, and the inside is pretty dank. Backup lighting lasts about 6 hours tops whenever NStar loses power for an extended period of time.
There are no fitness facilities, but the pool is well maintained, when they actually have a lifeguard on duty (oh yeah...deep pool is a plus).
Outdoor lighting stinks. The single bulb on the front roof of my building should have been replaced years ago, so it flickers on and off.
Most of the population seems to be Hindu and Indian naitve. There are a few retired people too. Everyone seems to be nice, but I don?t really know any of my neighbors.
Now the positives...moving in was a piece of cake, and there was plenty of room to move around. Cable service is provided by both AT&T and RCN. Phone is available from AT&T, RCN, and Verizon. It is still the cheapest place to hang your hat anywhere in the Rte. 128, metro North area. I never had any problems with bugs or pests during my stay.
Unless you are trying to save money, or have to live a mile from the mall or within a short walk to Sun Microsystems, look elsewhere first. Long term would be unbearable for more than a few years...especially with the increases.
