Expensive and run-down

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004
I lived here for about a year and a half in a small studio.
I would never live here again. I would suggest you not live here either.
Let me repeat this advice: Do not live here.
There are a litany of reasons. Let me start with the apartment itself. The rent is ridiculously high for the size and quality of the apartment you get (think 1400 for a studio). The kitchen appliances are dated (and energy-hungry). There is no central A/C -- only a heater unit that manages to make the air unbearably dry. The large windows are nice, except that during the winter, they are awfully good at making the room equally cold. Most of the rooms face the South, making summers stiflingly hot. The building itself is near-decrepit. A coat of paint here and there does not a renovation make.
The management is in-house, not that it makes much of a difference. They are not reachable through email (hi, welcome to the 21st century). They also manage to look busy all the time, while doing apparently nothing. When I moved to a new place, the new management wanted 100 Mem. to fax over a reference form. That took over two weeks. Either someone doesn't know how to use the fax machine or they just don't care. As an offside, one of the people working in the leasing office drives a high-end BMW. This hints at where our extraordinary rents go.
I tended to fix things myself (ie. leaky windows, rusting appliances, lack of a screen door) since I could not, for the life of me, understand the maintenance worker. Not that it would have helped.
Case in point, my fridge was too cold and causing a water leak onto the floor. The guy came in and said I should put more food in the fridge. That is not a solution, buddy. The stove/oven unit (of which the oven didn't work for a year) was also examined. The solution to that' A replacement unit. That was great, except that now the unit had a non-working stove.
For the amount I paid (1400/month for a studio), I don't think that merited such an unbelievable failure from this apartment on all levels, from the physical building itself to the people running it.
Please, do not live here.
