Not worth the money

Years at this apartment:

2003
Pros:
- Great location for MIT employees and teachers as it is surrounded by MIT buildings.
- The view of Boston is beautiful, speacially if you get a high floor (and pay more for this)
- Close to Kendall Square
- 5 minute drive or 3 T stops to downtown Boston
- Easy access to the T and to main highways.
Cons:
- Old apartments (built in 1950's) not well maintained (you may receive an apartment that apparently looks nice but after several weeks the rust that is beneath the paint will show up).
- The kitchen has not been updated since 1950, yes more 50 years ago!! Cabinets may have been luxurious back then, but now you will like to see other things. It has no "modern" appliance (no dishwasher or microwave, for example, which are included in most apartments within the Cambridge area)- it also has only 1 electrical plug, just in case you decide to get some appliances on your own.
- Specially during the summer you may find some little roaches visiting your kitchen.
- Apartments are really HOT during the summer, and if you don't get to buy a used A/C, it will be very expensive to buy one and have it installed. The reason: 1950 windows do not have the custom measure of those windows they use today, so a/c you'll find in a store for a normal window will not fit this one.
- During winter you may feel air coming through your window.
- Laundry is more expensive than in other buildings.
- If you expect to get an issue solved by the management office be prepared to visit them several times (you may get some cookies on each visit), and be patient because it may be weeks before you get an answer that for sure will take an average person 10 minutes.
-In the hallways you will smell a little bit of what each apartment is having for dinner. (It's a good chance to learn a little of international cuisine)
I recommend that before you decide to come and live here, do a little research because not far away you will be able to find really nice, new, modern and luxury apartment for the same fee or even less.
And by the way... if while you are seeing an apartment and Shannon and Tom say hi to a tenant, it is only because they what to look nice.
