growing pains

the place is brand-new, which is good and bad... it's good because the cheap carpet and appliances they put in haven't worn out yet, but it's bad because there are lot of systemic problems with the building.

the parking garage is nice, if you can get in before it fills up... right now you can probably convince them to include it for free, but i have a feeling it'll be overpriced when they have a reasonable occupancy rate. visitor parking sucks - your visitors need to pay $5 at the T station to park.

they obviously cut corners with building materials and appliances, but it's working out fine since it's all new - but i'd hate to live there 10 years from now.

management and the "concierge" make a lot of promises they can't make and it's still apparent they don't have their ---- together on a lot of issues.

they changed management companies not too long ago, so hopefully that was a change for the better, but at the moment, it remains to be seen.

the friggin pool still hasn't opened after getting the "next week" blow-off for a whole month straight...

the internet service sucks big time, and you don't have a choice to use other cable or DSL services... this is also true with the television cable service... it's some directTV hack which craps out during thunderstorms. there is some no-named subsidiary company that handles the media services and they don't seem to have the manpower or motivation to provide quality service.

i estimate the place is 1/4-1/2 occupied at most, so you can easily negotiate rent.

the walls are thinner than my comfort level requires and i can hear music or conversations from my neighbors on occasion, but luckly my neighbor isn't around that often. and i'm guessing most people don't have neighbors, it's so empty.

oh, and the frickin fire alarm is a pain the ass, goes off twice a month at least.

there are upsides - the place is pretty attractive-looking, courtyard included, the gym is nice (now that it's open), the concierge can be handy when receiving packages, it's a great commute for the red-line, the summershack rocks... and you can probably get a really good deal, all things considered.

the top things i would ask for improvements on are:
- media service (cable & internet)... the best solution there is to offer options, they don't right now.
- honesty and consistency in responses from all personel.
- parking for guests - there's a HUGE empty parking lot behind the building that no one uses... WTF'

i think it'll be a good place to live in a year or two when all the kinks are worked out and before things haven't degraded too severely... right now it's a little bit risky if you're picky about the issues i've listed.
