From nice place to nightmare

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2007
When my husband and I moved in to Stone Run in 2004, we chose it because it seemed like a nice quiet place to live with reasonable rent. How wrong we were!
Locks were never changed between tenants, so we never knew how many people had keys to our single lock door. We were not allowed to get a deadbolt or put a peephole in, so if anyone knocked, we had to open the door to see who they were. We had to fight with management so that my husband and I could both have keys to our apartment and we only ever had a single mail key. It didn't matter because we eventually had to have mail sent elsewhere because it was constantly being stolen from us. We reported this to management, but their response was to just send a letter asking people not to steal mail. No report was filed and we were never reimbursed for our stolen packages.
For half the time we rented there, our thermostat was broken. Maintenance constantly told us there was "no problem" and refused to fix it, so we spent all winter with our windows wide open to keep comfortable. We also had a disgusting mold problem in our bathroom to the point where the bathtub all caved in once which they refused to do anything about, despite there being a mold addendum to the lease and and our reporting it multiple times. My husband and I developed respiratory complications from it. The last winter we were there, I had bronchitis six times, my husband (who had never had it) four.
Aside from the mold, we also had a bad centipede problem which management never addressed, as well as a mice in our apartment.
The last three months we lived there, there were several break-ins, including one elderly woman who was broken into three times. The week we left, every car in the complex was keyed. Management said they would reimburse us for the cost of fixing it, but never did. There were always teens partying in the former tennis courts and sneaking over from the Garafalo Road projects. Management always told us to call the police, but the kids were gone from the parking lot before we could. Management refused to do anything else.
We were never given any information when it came time to renew our lease. Management was evasive about what our rent would increase to. We later found out that for our single bedroom, rent was going to go up to $1110. It was $910 when we first moved there! SRE charges an extra fee if you want to live on the middle floor. We were not told that when we moved in, but found it out from talking to other people in our building. We had originally applied for a first floor apartment, but were told the week before we moved in that "none were available" and we'd have to take a second floor one or not move in. We took it because we had already given our notice at our other place. We were charged an additional monthly fee for an "anticipated" second car. We were also told in our lease if we had overnight guests more than 10 times a year, they would be considered unauthorized tenants and we would be charged yet another fee. That's not 10 consecutive nights of the same guest, that's 10 overnights per year. Under this rule, my husband's visitation with his son would have made him an unlawful tenant.
Management was extremely two-faced, employed underhanded methods of of dealing with tenants, and sometimes outright lied. Several of us who moved out at the same time received letters informing us that our apartments were left in "filthy" condition and they would be keeping our security deposits, our security interest, and our key deposits, as well as billing us for additional damages. We also received letters addressed to different tenants, but claiming problems with our unit.
For instance, management lied to us, on our last check through, telling us we didn't have to worry about the carpets or counters because they were being replaced before a new tenant moved in. We had seen them doing this with other apartments after people had moved out. We spot cleaned, vacuumed, and washed the counters anyway, but did not steam clean the carpet. Two weeks later, in a letter, we were told that we would be charged for the replacement of both because they both were "ruined" (another lie).
A lot of longterm residents were moving around the same time we were. I really think that's a sign of how bad things have gotten at SRE. I am disgusted by how we were treated. I wouldn't recommend SRE to my worst enemy.
