Mostly good, but pricey

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2003

I lived in this apartment for 2 years, including during the transition of ownership from Flatley to AIMCO. Overall it is a great place to live - the grounds are well-kept, there is plenty of parking for both residents and guests, the area is safe, and very convenient to Route 9 and all the stores you could possibly want.
Although there is not a fitness center on site, residents can use the one up at Bayberry Estates, which is only 5 minutes up the road. The swimming pool is nice, although there is a tendency, especially towards the end of the summer, for it to either close early or not be open at all on some days. Apparently this is due to the lack of qualified lifeguards (who, for some bizarre reason, have to be present for the pool to be open).
The buildings are solid and the walls thick. I never heard my neighbors through the walls, even though there was a newborn baby living next door. My apartment looked out over the 'woods' (not the parking lot) and was therefore very quiet. The balconies are very big, but the kitchen and bathroom are reciprocally small. The latter two rooms, at least in the apartment I was in, could do with some work, as the fixtures and cupboards are old.
The closets are spacious, and a small lock-up storage cupboard is provided in the basement. Card-access washers and driers are in the basement as well, with ample space to do laundry. Garbage bins are in a room off the basement, while a recycling center is provided outside in the parking area.
The management is mostly helpful and maintenance is responsive and quick. Unfortunately, the job is not always done correctly the first time. However, they are willing to come back repeated until it is.
Since the new AIMCO management took over, things have deteriorated to some extent. They have begun levying new charges, like suddenly being charged for heating, when this was included when I moved to the apartment. This would increase the monthly rent in the winter by $40-60. To be fair, they didn't increase the rent the year that the new heat billing came in, but this is usually only 1%. Also, the management was unwilling to talk about this issue, even though I asked a number of times.
Other small things have changed, like the hallways not being kept as clean as they used to be. Also, there were changes to the rental agreement that I was not comfortable signing. In the end, I moved out because of these changes, and the extra charges. I liked the apartment and was comfortable there, but I didn't like the way things were going under AIMCO controls.
Overall I'd give this apartment complex a very good rating, but it is expensive.
