Looking forward to moving out

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
My husband & I moved here in late 2007 because he found a special deal for 1 month free rent where other places wanted 1st, last & security (for the security deposit here they offered Sure Deposit which was great because we had the option to pay a non-refundable $175). So the cost of moving in was very affordable for us & at first this seemed just perfect. The model apartment we were shown looked great but when we were let into our actual apartment on moving day it did not look the same. The carpet was a darker shade than the model but that's fine. The bathroom floor was an ugly shade of mauve & upon closer inspection noticed that it was not cleaned very well, looked like the last tenant spilled some hot-pink nail polish underneath the edge of the cabinet in front of the sink. The apartment was also freshly painted & I suspect it was done with very cheap paint because the fumes gave me a very bad headache for the first week we were there (never had that issue with paint before in my life). Also since it was winter it was very hot in the apartment & it seemed like the paint was "melting" & soon the carpet had little speckles of paint on it which was not there when we moved in; vacuuming did not help as the paint was stuck there. Our bureau & dresser also had a thin layer of paint particles on it. I have helped paint my mother's home many times & have never seen paint residue on the furniture or floor. We used to store pots & pans in the cabinet under the sink but had to remove them because water was leaking under there. Maintenance came & looked at it once but couldn't find the leak (after filling sink completely with water) & they haven't looked at it since so now that cabinet is probably getting ruined. Our stove doesn't work very well. If I bake brownies they get burned on the top while the middle isn't even cooked through. The largest part of the range kept shutting off because once you put something on it such as a pot of water for spaghetti the weight caused it to pull out of the connector so you'd go see if the water was boiling yet & found that it wasn't even on.
A few weeks after we moved in a new tenant moved in upstairs & it caused some problems for us as one night we were trying to sleep & I could hear water dripping from our bathroom ceiling & it was more than a trickle. You could hear that the tenant upstairs was taking a shower so we called emergency maintenance. The maintenance guy was very nice & prompt. He knocked on the upstairs tenant's door & it turned out that he was taking a shower with NO SHOWER CURTAIN!!! Who does that' You could skip the curtain & just get a liner & they are very cheap. So the guy was told that he could not take a shower until he put up a curtain. The next night the same maintenance guy was knocking on everyone's door to let us know that the heat was not working but that they were busy repairing it. He went to the upstairs tenant before us & asked if he bought a shower curtain yet. The tenant was very rude & his reply was that he would buy one when they fix the heat. This same tenant upstairs started making a lot of noise at very late hours after the shower incident. Of course you will hear footsteps above you but this guying was "stomping" on the floor, so loud that you knew it was being done on purpose. His noise kept waking me up or keeping me awake. After awhile I called the office & told someone the situation & how much this guy was bothering us. Something must have been said to him (or maybe he moved out) because the noise level really went down after that.
Since we are on the 1st floor & there is no basement, we ended up getting ants in our bathroom. They chewed holes right through the caulk that connects the toilet to the floor. Don't know if other tenants on the 1st floor have had this problem but it took a while for management to respond. My husband left a message for the office & didn't hear anything after 12 days & then called again. Pest control came & sprayed but the ants came back & they had to spray again. After spring started the ants went away & I haven't seen one since.
Also there is a no pets policy & people do have pets here. There are at least 2 dogs & 1 cat just in our building. My husband & I want to move into a pet-friendly complex after this so we can have a cat but we don't believe in violating the no-pet policy. Not saying anything to the office because I don't want some poor cat or dog going to the pound & possibly getting euthanized because their owner cannot follow rules. Another rule is that tenants are not allowed to have a grill (there is a designated area on the grounds with grills to use) but look on tenants' balconies & some do have them. At night I've heard grown men screaming & swearing outside. Also some of the kids around here like to knock on people's doors & then take off. There has also been a leak in the ceiling right outside our apartment in the hallway. One morning it was bulging & we called maintenance. Later in the day most of the tile actually fell on the floor in pieces because it was so saturated & the floor was all wet. Response to that was pretty slow.
Some nights you're trying to sleep & people are screaming outside, & it's not always children it's adults too. My husband & I try to be quiet so that we don't bother other people. Overall the problems we've had aren't that bad compared to horror stories I've heard about other complexes. The impression I get is that wherever you go there are some tenants who have no consideration for others whether it's about noise or otherwise & the management here doesn't seem to care how people behave or really enforce the rules. There is also a laundry facility but no change machine & if something is wrong with one of the machines it is up to the tenant to call the repair # on the machine, not the staff.
The one thing I really like about our apartment is the view from our patio where you can see the birds, squirrels, flowers & trees. That's the one thing I'm really going to miss more than anything else. So for the money this place is ok, but we're gonna look for a place that enforces it's rules & doesn't allow it's tenants to act up so much.
