Good value, quiet

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006

I only lived at Twin Oaks for a year, but I liked it a lot.
I had a top floor apartment facing inwards (ie, away from
Oakland Street), and it was the quietest place I've ever
lived. The walls and floors did seem a bit thin,
but the tenants seemed to be mostly professional
people, and were pretty quiet generally. You might
get a bit more noise facing the street, as there are
some trucking companies down the street and it
gets a fair amount of truck traffic during the day.

During the summer, the apartment could get a bit
stuffy: all the windows (actually sliding doors onto
the two decks, not windows) face the same way, so
you couldn't really get a cross-breeze going. Each
apartment comes with an air conditioner, though,
and Mansfield has a municipal electric company so
the electric bills aren't too bad if you run it a lot.

During the winter, the heat worked great. Also, they
must have one heck of a water heater in the basement,
because the water in this apartment got really hot
really fast.

The apartments are well taken care of. Don't be
fooled by the appearance of the balconies, which
look a bit decrepit but are a great place to relax
during the summer months.

Since I was only here a year, I didn't interact much
with the management. Seemed OK to me, kept
everything working, plowed the lots promply
during the winter and so on.

The complex is across the street from a chocolate
factory, of all things, and the parking lot smells
positively sinful a few days a month :-)

Commuter rail (Mansfield station) is only about a five
minute walk, and the train is actually pretty reliable.
It takes about 45 minutes to get into Boston. The only
problem is that it doesn't run as often as
you'd like outside of the peak commuting hours.

In the end, I got a new job in Cambridge and the
daily commute was taking too much of my time.
So now I'm somewhere closer which is about as nice
as Twin Oaks, but quite a bit more expensive, too.
If it weren't for the commute, I'd definitely still
be there. It's just a nice place to live.
