Our opinion of the place has been mediocre since day 1 for many reasons, some things are worse than average, but most everything else is just average. For instance, the apartment noise for neighbors above us is horrible, we can hear every foot step, and even a 40lb dog walking across the floor, the appliances are all included but are cheap & noisy, the dishwasher works well, but only if we run the faucet for several minutes before starting the dishes to make sure it gets the hottest water possible. On the other hand, the property management is always courteous & responsive, if nothing else.
However, our decision to not renew our lease was made today. We now have water running down the walls and several STEADY drips running INSIDE the windows. This building is brand new! It's only about 9 months old!!!
There is LOTS of melting snow pouring down the side of the place. HUGE icicles hanging off roofs, gas meters covered in up to 6" of solid ice. Most all of the snow has melted off the roof despite sub-freezing weather. Did they even insulate & ventilate the attic'
We called property management, the maintenance guy shows up, peels back the carpet near the wall, sets up a commercial blower (plugged into MY outlet and at MY expense, he spends and hour trying to chip away ice on the outside of the building before finally giving up. He left us a full roll of paper towel and a 5 gallon pail and leaves the blower running! I was so annoyed that I placed the entire roll of paper towel on the window sill, it was 100% saturated within 10 minutes the pail is useless because the water runs down the window and splashes on the sash, it never drips to a place where it can be collected. Within a few hours, the carpet & pad is saturated 4 feet away from the window for most the width of the wall.
Property management said they would check in periodically and try to fix the problem when possible but basically told me to deal with it, because "this is New England and everybody is having these problems". Soooo, 3 days before Christmas I'm moving the kids toddler beds into the master bedroom (the property manager was good enough to reminded me of "how fortunate I was to have a second bedroom and have this option"). I've had to move all the kids stuff out of the room and lock door. Hey kids, welcome to your first (and only!!!) Christmas in your "luxury residence"!!!
The place looks great, the location is pretty decent, and the rent is a little higher than normal ($2000 for a 2B/2B), but you really have to ask yourself, do you really want your kids kicked out of their bedroom 3 days before Christmas and be told to deal with it'

"this is New England and everybody is having these problems"
Sounds typical of them. Some of the phrases I've heard from them are "You don't own this place. You're renting it, so it doesn't matter if we fix anything or not", and "You shouldn't expect that high of a quality level from an apartment." Great marketing. That last one should be their new slogan.
