The Hard Knock Life

I have lived in this building since it opened in 2001, and it has been in a downward spiral ever since. I am paying market price for what is arguably the best apartment in the building. Mill Falls does participate in the Low Income Housing Credit program, which is just fine with me. Here are the problems, in no particular order:

1. Mediocre construction. The place feels like it was thrown together in a rush to meet some arbitrary deadline, and every conceivable corner brutally butchered. My windows leak when it rains to the point that paint is peeling off my walls. Walls feel like cardboard and sound like paper; Conversations on other floors sound as if they were in the room with me.

2. Poor/non-existent customer service. Try calling Mill Falls during normal business hours. I can almost guarantee you you'll get the answering service. When packages are delivered, no one is available to sign for them. When the laundry machines are out of service (see below) residents have no recourse. When you need to speak to maintenance: sorry, leave a message and someone will call you back. I've even been stood up for an appointment I made with the property manager! And even if management is present during normal business hours, good luck getting any face time with them if you work normal hours.

3. Building maintenance. Not to disparage maintenance per se because they've got their work cut out for them, but virtually all the services this community alleges to provide are out of order much of the time. Laundry machines' Forget it! CONSTANTLY broken. And when you can find a machine that is in service, the ridiculous Mac-Gray system Mill Falls employs is a complete joke. That company should be run out of town on a rail! You're completely dependent on their highly defective cards in order to use the machines, and god forbid you should have an issue with those. When I do laundry, I just want to feed a couple quarters into the machine and have done with it, NOT fight with some STAR TREK card with a microchip implant that can't be read 5 times out of 10. Problem' Sorry... management has left for the day, but Mac-Gray should be able to assist in a day or two. I have been caught three times with soggy laundry that I couldn't dry because the machines decided to stop reading my card between loads. And of course, you have to pre-pay, so whatever money was left on the card is lost forever. Much of the equipment in the fitness center has been in disrepair for some time now. The trash chute is often clogged and out of service, and anything larger than a watermelon requires you to trudge down the street to the dumpster. Consequently, it seems, many of the residents have opted to simply deposit their discarded items and trash in the hallways and lobby, which in turn prompts another papal bull from management (see below).

4. Visitor parking. Like the dumpster (hmmm... coincidence') it is located down the street from the building. Tough luck if you have a relative or visitor that is disabled in any way, because management will promptly have them towed, according to the latest edict. Which brings me to...

5. Attitude. Mill Falls management seems to forget that I am a well-paying customer, who employs them to provide me with a product and services. Their attitude seems to be more that of the sadistic Ms. Hannigan from ANNIE, taking us under their wing out of the goodness of their heart. The only time you hear from them is when they slip some new set of rules under your door. "As of today, you are no longer permitted to do this!" "By royal edict, you are henceforth required to do that!" But go to them with a problem and the resolution will be a longtime coming, if at all. While this may be a business to those who operate the property, it is a home to those of us who live here.

Why do I still live here' I've moved so many times in recent years I'm just tired of it. It's such an emotionally and financially expensive endeavor, that I want my next move to be into a house. Perhaps once Massachusetts again provides reasonably priced homes to single adults I'll be able to realize that dream, but until then I'm stuck with the nightmare of Mill Falls.
