Very good place to live, watch for neighbors and heating

I am largely in agreement with many of the previous posts. Yes, this is a great place to live, although not perfect. But I think it would be very hard to find anything better for this price. I have lived in 4 different rental complexes (and know a lot about 10 more because my friends live in them) in the northern suburbs and RC is the best, most home-like. The staff is friendly, prompt and caring, the facilities are great (pool, gym, community room, walk-around pond, vegetable garden, parking, etc...) and the buildings are although aging but reasonably well-kept. I would recommend the complex to anyone, but there are 3 things to look out for:
1 - neighbors. Our next door folks were young and hosted parties every single week, smoking, playing music and watching sports on tv very loud in the small bedroom next to my son's bedroom. I asked them 3 times but they didn't even go to another room. So watch out for the neighbors! I think the floor is concrete so noise doesn't travel up-down that much.
2 - heating. Yepp, electric heat, high ceilings on the top floor, large, open floorplans. Winter of 2003-2004 was pretty cold, I had several $300 monthly bills. But my pregnant wife had to stay at home all day with the 2-year old so we heated non-stop.
3 - route 114. #29 is right next to the road and we were facing that way too. If the windows were closed it was OK but sometimes you just have to let the air in. Even then it wasn't unbearable, but the traffic is pretty heavy on that road and yes it is noisy. Try to choose a more set-back unit if you can.
That's about it, and yes I agree with the person complaining about bad cellular reception and seemingly more snow in the properties - hardly is the fault of the community but can be annoying.
Great events for the kids, clubs, library, free pizza and movies, clean and nice exterior, convenient laundry-cards (no need to carry truckloads of quarters), etc made our year in the RC a pleasant one. We moved because we wanted to stay close to my wife's best freind in Stoneham (two moms at home with kids, it's good to have them close) but they relocated overseas, so we actually might move back to RC this season. It was that good. Just keep the 3 things in mind.

Well, there isn't much you can do about noisy neighbors. Once you've moved in, you're stuck with them umtil you or they move. It would be nice to get the 411 on who your neighbors are before you move in but unrealistic. This is a transient community--people are in and out of here all the time, so just grit your teeth and bear it until they move out. |
