Basic apartment living...

I've lived here since 2006 and am relocating this summer. There are pros and cons to living here -- basically it's up to you and what you're willing to deal with and NOT willing to deal with. The neighborhood is safe, although the cops seem to hang around RTE. 1 and pull people over more often than not; for what I can't say -- I just know I usually see two cruisers on various cars regularly. I attribute that to low crime rates and extra time on their hands. Also, the apartments are the cheapest you can rent in this area, which is a definite positive and they are quite spacious, but as most other people noted, the walls are very thin so noise levels can get ridiculous and if you do decide you want to move, you are locked into a year lease with no wiggle room. I know this as I tried to get out of my current lease a few months ahead of time and was told that I couldn't. You really do hear just about everything and being that I'm a light sleeper, it's hard at times to deal with the fact that I hear every single step of my neighbors above me to the point that it sounds like they are stomping although they probably aren't. Let's just say the walls are so thin, that one time when I first moved in and I had my radio on in the living room at about 10 pm, I heard a knock at the door and it was the North Attleboro Police. Someone had called the cops on me and said my music was too loud. I asked the cops if they could hear the music from outside BEFORE and after I opened the door and they replied "No, but someone made a complaint. Just try to keep it down." I could hardly contain my chuckle. Yes, the leasing agents tell you to call the cops if anyone makes noise, which in my mind is a bit much, but that's so they don't have to deal with confrontation, as I'm sure MANY people complain about the noise. I have neighbors that shout and make noise on a regular basis and you don't see me calling the cops on them otherwise I would never put the handset down. Heck, I've even had neighbors who used to live above me "smoking" something since smoke with a very odd stench would filter down into the vents into my bathroom from theirs to the point where I had to buy candles so that my bathroom wouldn't have that odor in it. Another positive is the washer and dryer in 1 bdrm and bigger units, also a separate storage room with extra space if you need/want it. Things tend to break and maintenance sometimes has to be called 2 or 3 times, but they eventually get whatever it is fixed. The grounds around the complex are decent and I've never have had to worry about my car getting broken into. They could use some more overhead lamps for those coming in at night though. The pool they advertise is hard to get to use due to the time it is open and the amount of children in it. It appears clean, but I can't say as I've never had the chance to use it. Certain staff members are more friendly than others about resolving issues. The plus side to having a year lease is that when they decide to raise the rent in the middle of the year (and/or your lease), you get to pay what you've been paying opposed to the sucker who just moved in and is paying more money than you are for the same services. The electric bill fluctuates quite drastically and I've started unplugging everything since April and trying not to use any heat (it's electric) so that my bill would go back down to $50-60/month opposed to the $150 and up it can get to during cold months and early spring. Overall, it's a decent enough place to live if you don't plan to stay too long and make enough money to save and get your own home in the shortest amount of time possible. I think the apartments really could be remodeled and updated since the cost of them seems to go up continually. I was drawn in by the central location between all highways and the accessibility of local business establishments, but the actual design of the entrance/exit makes it difficult at times just to get out of the complex because of the traffic flow being so heavy at rush hour, weekends and the holiday season. It's not the worst place to live, but it's not the best. It's an ok environment that could use some definite upgrades. It has potential if some of that rent increase would go to actual remodeling on the premises.
