The apartments are nice... the amenities are nice... most neighbors are nice... the management however, not so nice. I was a resident of building 8 that was completely destroyed on May 29th and after the unacceptable treatment I received from the management I feel obligated to recommend that new renters be very cautious about the information they are given when signing the lease. Most importantly, be sure to thoroughly research renter's insurance options and to choose insurance that covers contents. My experience with Highlands was that I was given the option of 2 insurance coverage amounts from an insurer they chose and asked to pick one without any significant explanation as to what was covered (one covers belongings, one covers nothing.. though this is not clear when presented to you). I would hope that things have changed with this procedure after the recent fires, but you never know. Communication during the fire was completely unacceptable. Information was not communicated in any sort of clear, consistent, or organized manner. The majority of information I received (such as where to obtain assistance, shelter, reimbursements, insurance, recovered belongings, mail, etc.) came from other residents with whom I spoke to by chance. Yes, it's true that no one expects such disasters to occur, but no it is not acceptable to not have an emergency plan in place to follow in the instance that such an event occurs. Professionalism was non existent in the midst of the crisis. This may be due to lack of training, stress, who knows. The thing is, as a resident of a building that was completely destroyed... I expected and deserved to be treated with the utmost level of respect and empathy, but to say that this did not happen would be an understatement. If you are considering renting in this complex just be aware that management is ill equipped to satisfactorily handle disaster. Be sure to document all interactions you may have with staff, because they often provide conflicting information and clearly do not communicate with each other effectively. Don't get me wrong, the staff are able to do things like retrieve packages, accept your rent check, help with repairs, and respond to other requests for the most part... but when push comes to shove they will certainly look out for their best interests and needs ahead of yours. Rent with caution. odusyNYCcZ7yL3Bj5JtG

First of all let me say that I am very sorry about your losses. I am a resident at Highlands and I feel for you and your situation. However, your opinion of the staff deeply disturbs me. I have NEVER presented a situation to them that was not dealt with the utmost respect for me as not just a tenant but also as a person. As far as the insurance coverage that was presented to me as an option, I was free to research other carriers and policies. I completely understood the types of coverage available through Highlands' recommended carrier. If you did not, then you needed to say so at that time... Again, as a fellow resident, I am sorry that you fell the way you do. Maybe in time your hurt and anger will diminish. I hope so.

I'm sorry, can't take advice from someone foolish enough not to READ THE FINE PRINT on something as unimportant as protecting your worldly belongings. Don't blame management for your laziness! Happy and insured in B12

Foolish is a strong word. Naive is more appropriate, considering it was my first experience in purchasing renter's insurance and I trusted what I was told. Clearly I have learned from this experience and do blame myself for making the poor decision to choose a coverage amount that didn't work. I stand by what I said regarding the presentation of the insurance options and simply posted this to encourage new renters to learn from my mistake and be aware of the importance of doing the research. I naively believed that I had nothing to worry about. As for the person happy and insured in B12, I'm glad your apartment was not destroyed and I wish you well.
