Cliffside Apts. was my first encounter with the US. Coming straight from a nice European welfare state, the US was a shock to me and Cliffside seemed to epitomize the experience (not sure if this is good English). I found the staff extremely spooky and business-minded; they had that uncomfortable professional kindness that you realize (too late) is all about sucking money out of you. They treated their maintenance people like ----. The appartment was OK I guess, hugely overprized in my opinion and dusty carpets is not my idea of luxury, but anyway. Sunderland is quite dull, and you need to have a car to get anywhere (another shock for a European). But there were actually free buses, driven by what looked like 16-year olds (not old enough to drink beer). The United States is a cruel place where money is everything and shiny appearances really get you far. Cliffside is no exception.
