After reading the reviews on this site, I had to weigh in. I'm a current resident at Sugarloaf and have been here since 2006. Coming from the Boston area, the area and lifestyle here was a welcome change for me and my girlfriend. At the time in 2006, a 2 bedroom for about $900 was an absolute steal, compared to other rents we had seen. It was kinda cool/kinda cheesy that they gave me a free iPod for signing a summer lease in 2006. Whatever, free stuff is cool. The apartment itself was the biggest one we have had, although it is nothing spectacular.
I'll respond to the common themes that have come up in most reviews:
Quality of the apartments: Like I said, the actual unit is nothing special. Cheap rug, large A/C unit in the living room (it gets the job done in the summer), old windows that tend to stick, a dishwasher we've had issues with. The closets are my pet peeve; they have big, metal sliding doors that constantly fall off the track. The bathroom is small, but what apartment in this price range is going to give you a large bathroom' Cliffside and Brandywine (two local apts) have similar bathrooms. Depending on how you lay out your apartment, there's enough space for 2 people.
Noise level: As most renters know, the noise is mostly proportional to who your neighbors are. Up until the last 6 months, I've had no problems with noise. Now, the new crop of people living in my building love to slam doors at all hours of the night. Management should upgrade the front door so that at least doesn't slam (they did to the door at their office). My current downstairs neighbors scream at each other constantly and smoke weed, but that's not Sugarloaf's fault. I blast my surround sound when I watch movies or play video games. It's a peril that comes with renting.
Management and Maintenance: I agree with one reviewer's comment that they haven't seen the same face twice at the office. Neither have I. There is always someone different there when I drop off my rent check. At least they don't hire ugly girls. The maintenance is ok. Any problem I've had, they've fixed. The extraneous problems like the large water main break...I don't think that was their fault. My understanding was it was the Town of Sunderland's problem. It was ridiculous that we didn't have water for days, but I don't know how much they contributed to that. On the flip side, it does seem like every month the water is shut off one day from 8am-5pm. So nobody can shower for work' WTF'
What hasn't been brought up is the electrical issues that have occured here. Once again, I think it has nothing to do with Sugarloaf, but rather the surrounding area. Our power has gone out many, many times here. Most recently, in the dog days of summer, no one had power here for 24hrs. Almost all my food went bad and I slept in 95 degree heat. Not fun.
Snow removal IS a joke here. I never move my car and it doesn't get towed like they threaten to do. Likewise, when I do get out on time, they don't completely plow the lot OR don't plow at all. I think this year was unfortunate for snow because every storm occured on a Friday/Saturday. You think they'll get the plows out on the weekend' HA that's funny. Anyone expecting otherwise is a fool. I didn't expect it, nor should you.
Special Features: As of now, we have free cable and internet through Comcast. It was originally through Apartmenthost.com, which sucked. I agree the internet crashed every weekend with that server. Now, I don't experience any problems. I always thought the free cable/internet thing was great since previously I was paying anywhere from $120-$140 per month. Is it built into the rent' Well, that would mean my rent should be about $850 per month. Either way, I gotta have cable/int so might as well get it this way.
The pool is always crowded and always had this annoying lady there. She was dating some big, dumb musclehead and had a kid with him. Her voice was like nails on a chaulkboard. The "Fitness Center" isn't a fitness center. I don't know why they call it that. It's just a small room with a few machines. It's fine for me, I use the treadmills, but increasing the rent for it was just lame. The basketball court should be ripped down, it's a joke.
Overall, I do like living here. I do wish my rent was lower as it has gone up in 2 years. Maybe I'll look for a new place this coming summer to save more money, but I won't be leaving because I hate it here. Basically, I've lived in worse places.

in regards to car towing, you're apparently one of the lucky ones. Mine was towed multiple times when I didn't wake up and move it in the middle of the night (or at least, before the crack of dawn when they called the tow company), but there were always some cars in the lot that would be covered in snow weeks after the last storm, which were clearly NEVER moved.
