Very Expensive, Management Lies

The management staff are deceitful. Be very WARY. For example, when we first moved into the complex, the rent was reasonable. The very next year, they increased the rent by $200 and claimed it was due to a "market survey". It was true, the market did raise; however, certainly not by 15%! Nevertheless, the following year, the market had started to decline, but they tried to raise rent again!! Every year we've been here, they've tried to increase the rent substantially even when there are vacancies. I believe their policy is to try to raise rent because they know its a pain in the ass to move out. If you move here, be prepared to be trapped.
Furthermore, when you are looking for a place, they will lie to make it appear that the vacancy is not nearly as low as it really is so they can charge premium rates. We know this for a fact because another family member was looking to move in while the market was low and there were many vacancies; yet they told him they only had two apartments available and gave him a ridiculous quote. This was clearly a lie because on our floor alone (one of three floors, and one building of seven), we had two vacancies!!
As a final example of the tactics pulled by management, I'll need to explain the parking situation one year. Each building has parking directly in front of it (one row), and then beyond that are the car ports (which you have to pay for). Normally, there is not a problem with parking. However, one year, no one wanted to pay for car ports (they were trying to charge an extra $60/month) for a spot. As a result, there were not enough regular free spaces, but plenty of car ports available (90% of them). Well, what does management do to solve the problem' They force all visitors to park like three buildings away or be towed!! That may not sound like much, but how would you like your guests when they leave at night to walk by themselves in the dark over to some other parking lot'!' This was management's solution to THEIR problem and poor planning. Instead of giving away the completely unused car ports, they inconvience the residents!! Eventually, management decided to lower the rates on the car ports to $40/month for the winter to alleviate some of the parking issues. So they had these big flyers everywhere stating this fact. Two weeks later, we get our rental renewal, and they had the nerve to bump our car port rate up to $60/month, when they were offering them at $40/month!!! Clearly, we fought with them on that point, but it just goes to show the nerve that this management company has.
My final advice before moving in is to just make sure you weigh all the pros and cons. If you don't need to stay for more than a year, then you may be alright cuz the price jacks come in subsequent years when they know its more of a pain in the ass to move out than to just sign the new rate. Be very careful.
