Good and bad (but mostly good)

Edit: I am amending my opinion to say that I definitely would NOT recommend living here. You can read my opinion below for all of the good and bad things that I thought before, but I'm now saying that I do not recommend it because after you move out they will charge you exorbitant fees for things they have to do anyways ($1500 for vacuuming, carpet, and cleaning). They are extremely bad business people (I had other problems with them as well) and only live here if you think the good outweighs all the crap you have to put up with (or just never move out).
My previous opinion:
I'd probably consider living here again if a) I wasn't relocating to a different state, and b) they weren't raising my rent 25%. I would have to pay $500 more a month, which I think is ridiculous. (Beware of this; I now ask when looking at apartments for typical rent increases to make sure they won't do this.)
Anyways, here's my opinion on the place.
Good:
- Location: Very convenient for commuting, either by car or train. It's right next to the commuter rail which is only a 20 minute ride into North Station. It's also very close to 95 and the Mass Pike. Also, Moody St. is a great place to live with restaurants and bars and such, and being next to the Charles River is nice.
- Safety: The building and garage are very secure (although see below for the bad about the garage). I've always felt safe both inside the building and garage and outside on the street.
- Maintenance: The maintenance staff is amazing. They respond to all requests right away, and while there they will fix anything else they notice wrong in your apartment without you even having to ask. They do everything (including changing your light bulbs and smoke detector batteries), and theyre really friendly. From what I've heard good maintenance is hard to find, but these guys definitely are the best.
- Concierge: The daytime concierge is great. If you need anything, go down during the day and he'll take care of you, and he's always happy to do it. The evening and night-time ones are good too, but I always try to go down during the day if I can.
Bad:
- THINS WALLS. If the person in the apartment next to you is talking above normal volume, you will hear it. If they have a cough at night, you will have to listen to it. (I don't even want to imagine what would happen if they had a crying baby.) If they have a dance party/sing-along at 3am on a Tuesday night, you will be kept awake. And I don't know how this happens, but if they SMOKE you will smell it. Even if your windows are closed and the ac/heat are turned off, the smoke will come through. And if you're sensitive to smoke like I am, you won't be able to breath in your own room. This is my single biggest complaint; I had a very annoying neighbor.
- The apartment doors slam if you let go of them. This gets very annoying when your neighbors have people coming in and out constantly and don't know how to close a door gently. The walls shake.
- Garage: There are poles in very inconvenient places which make pulling into certain parking spots very difficult. (But on the plus side, if you don't like your parking space that they assign you, you can go to the leasing office and they will let you choose another space from the available options). The biggest difficulty is that the garage doors are almost constantly broken. There are two separate entrances/exits, and a while back it seemed like every day one of them was not functional. The doors were either stuck halfway down or wouldn't open at all. But they were always working to fix them and are aware of the problem (and sympathetic). Also, you have to be careful driving around corners because two cars barely fit together and if there's someone coming the other way (which you usually cannot see because of the other cars parked), you can hit them. I haven't actually seen or heard this happen, but I've had some near misses, and I can definitely see it as a risk if someone isn't careful.
- Trash: The dumpsters where the trash shoots empty are in the garage. This means that the garage sometimes smells like trash. It's pretty gross when it happens. I haven't noticed if it's only at the end of the month before they come to empty them or what, but it's pretty unpleasant.
Non-issues:
- My apartment faces Moody St., and I've never had an issue with street noise (cars, busses, etc.). Also, you don't hear the train even though it passes right by on the other side of the river. The only noise I hear is from one particular bar across the street that sometimes has loud music which you can hear when their door opens. But it's not that bad and it's only once a week if that.
- Other people in the building: I've read reviews on here complaining about college students and such, but I've never had any issues with other people in the building (aside from my annoying neighbor - NOT a college student but a grown woman). I hardly even ever see anyone else in the building aside from the occasional person in the elevator, and they're always very friendly.
The conclusion of my extremely lengthy (but hopefully helpful) opinion is that if you get the right apartment (i.e. a good neighbor), this is a great place to live. I'd definitely recommend it.
