For the most part the experience my wife and I had at Gardencrest over 2 years has been satisfactory. The area is clean, quiet, safe, and basically centrally located between 95 and downtown. However, the apartments are pretty old (I've heard they pre-date WWII) and as such present quite a few problems. The walls are paper thin, the floors creak, the door knobs are antiques, the bathroom decoration is a mixture of 60s, 70s, 80, and 90s trends, some of the doors don't close, etc. Our paint has cracked and chipped extensively since we arrived and the walls are 3/8 inch sheetrock wihich means that you can forget about hanging pictures on about half of the walls unless you're ready to do major construction. The parking is absolutely atrocious - the mangagement's total disregard for this obvious shortcoming is totally beyond me.

Again all of these things amounted to annoyance but not grounds for finding a new place when we resigned our lease 6 months ago. The people in the office seem like they are generally well-intentioned though they will give you a deadline for repairs etc and then exceed it by 2 weeks.

I can't speak to relative pricing, value, or quality as this is the only place we looked at seriously. They claim to have some major upgrade planned but they promised us new windows like last summer and we didn't get them until this September - so I'm not sure their promises are credible.

Live here if you can't find any better place to live but be prepared for some day-to-day annoyances.
