I grew up around the corner from Gardencrest and was a tenant there in the early 80s. Back in the day, when the complex was run by Old Man Devincent, it was a cozy well kept complex of "garden apartments." The original owners were choosy about their tenants and yet there was always a waiting list because it was immaculately maintained and beautifully landscaped. Back then it was peopled with decent middle-class families and respectable elderly folk. Now when I go through there to visit my mom it makes me sick. The gardens which justified the name "Gardencrest" are under asphalt. There is junk everywhere and all sorts of unsavory loafers hanging around during working hours. I could not believe when I read in the local papers about drug raids and crime at Gardencrest. I am even more shocked reading these reviews: theft from the maintenance crews, no snow removal, noise, no parking. Strangely there are actually more parking spaces than before, but apparently many tenants now allow in illegal squatters who eat them up. Does anyone know the percentage of Section-Eight subsidized units there are in this place' I have heard its over 20%. Waltham already has two housing projects. Apparently it now has a third
