I have been living at The Ridge for about 9 months and have had a great experience there. We are paying about 15% less rent then comparable "luxury" apartments within 5 or 10 miles of Boston, and everything about The Ridge has been great. The apartments are new and beautiful, have required very little maintenance (only light bulbs burning out, we had a draft in one of the bedrooms from the window, and like one of the other posters the "granite" countertops are a little cheap and the molding peels), and the other tenants have been great.
I am a young professional who works 9-5 every day and have never experienced bothersome neighbors, loud parties, etc. When I moved in the first question they asked was our working status and required a notarized letter from our employer to confirm where we worked. None of the tenants I have met or seen around are what I would classify as a college student (potentially a grad student).
The property has been VERY well maintained from paint in the hallways to cleaning of gutters, snow removal, landscaping, the pool, etc. The staff has been extremely helpful whether it's replacing a lost apartment key, maintenance in the apartment, or answering lease questions.
I have lived IN Boston (Brighton) and less than 5 miles north of my Boston office (in Medford) and my commute is still shorter from The Ridge. I drive to Alewife station (10-15 minutes including traffic) and take the red line downtown. Overall commute to the Financial Distrcit is about 45 minutes door to door.
The negatives would be that construction is perhaps somewhat cheap (I agree that there are thin walls and cheap countertops, loud dishwasher, we have 1 drafty window). With any corporate-owned complex we have no room for rent negotiation and were asked to renew our lease 3 months before the lease was up. There is one trash dumpster in the whole complex that you need to bring your trash to (no trash pickup). Storage space in the apartments is very minimal and a storage unit is an additional $100 / month.
I would recommend this complex to anyone, whether working downtown or outside of the city.
