Not the best, not totally awful

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
I lived in WV for about a year, 2001-2002.
In some ways, reading the horror stories on this website surprises me. Maybe I was just lucky, but I had absolutely no problems with Bentley students, or anyone else. Noise was not an issue at all.
I also didn't experience any problems with insects or mice. And my unit was not new or renovated. The shuttle to Alewife was great, though I wished it ran a little later during the week. (When I was there, the last run was around 7 or 7:30 pm).
The area felt safe. I didn't worry about walking around the complex alone at night. Parking was sometimes a b*tch, but not to the point of utter frustration. Worst case scenario, I'd have to walk a little bit, no big deal. It was actually kind of a nice environment overall.
So why wouldn't I recommend it' Number one - price, price, price! The rent was easily as high as some city apartments, without any of the conveniences of city living. It was simply a bad value for the money.
Number two - shoddy construction. Yes, my floors were very crooked and warped. And everything creaked! I'd have to tiptoe down the stairs in the morning so as not to wake my roommates up, and I'm not a big person. It felt like the apartment had been thrown together in a big hurry with crappy materials.
Number three - maintenance. The maintenance staff was nice, and even responsive. But their workmanship was not acceptable. We had a leaking pipe that created a big, wet crack in the wall between our kitchen and living room. We must have called a thousand times to get that fixed. They'd come by and look at it, tinker around a bit - and then leave without actually solving the problem. I think it was the sort of thing that needed a professional plumber, rather than a general handyman, but the management was too cheap to call one.
Number four - speaking of management! The office staff were nice as pie, but not at all helpful. It took them MONTHS to get anything done, if ever, though of course they were always quick about cashing checks.
So overall, I wouldn't tell anyone to run away from here screaming. I've lived in a truly dangerous, rundown apartment before, and WV is definitely several notches above that. However, for what you pay, you can do much better.
