Things looked good at first, then started going downhill fast

When I first moved into this apartment(in late 2006, now May 2008), I was amazed at the price for what you got. It seemed like a great neighborhood, there were plans for new landscaping, it was quaint, quiet and spacious for the rent ($625/month). Aside from some minor traffic problems here and there, Westfield is a beautiful and affordable town. I had thought I found the perfect apartment.
But, after living in these apartments for 2 years now, I've had some mixed experiences. Rent has been increased ($650 for most I believe). The residents are starting to get more and more noisy, as the Landlord seems to be getting less picky about the quality of the tenancy as the economy diminishes. Noise has been pretty standard for an apartment, but I have had a few problems. Parking has been fantastic, there are always spots open, and this has never been an issue.
And then there's the customer service/maintenance aspect, which is simply attrocious. The Laundry machines on site are rarely operating, and have never worked properly in the time I've been here. We go to a laundromat, so don't let the on site broken washers and dryers fool you. Despite countless calls from several residents, these have never been fixed. There is a gutter with a huge nail hanging down. After 3 calls and several months, this was never fixed. The landscaping, which has been in progress for some time, has been stopped for about 6 or 7 months now, and the grounds look awful. If you are lucky enough to get through to customer service, getting anything fixed is nearly impossible, and there are very very few things that they will pay to replace.
Customer service is pretty bad too. I asked about getting a peephole installed in my door for what I thought was a legitimate security purpose. When I asked if the landlord would pay for it, the person I spoke with said "are you joking'" Not professional at all, this customer service staff is simply substandard.
Good neighborhood, good parking, fairly good in terms of noise and neighbors, bad customer service, and the worst maintenance I've ever seen. Still, this place is a pretty good deal in Western Mass, but not nearly as much as it was in 2006. Know what you are getting into. You could do a LOT WORSE than Madison, but if maintenance/laundry is a sticking point for you, look elsewhere.
