let me start off by saying that i have a lived in several rental communities and i have never dealt with so many issues in such a short span of time!
there were issues from the moment we sign the lease- i hardly know where to start! when we toured the property we were told that the intercom at the entrance worked even if you did not have phone service. after about ten calls to the front office we were told that our comcast phone did not work with the intercom. so no buzzing people in- people at the door could not even call us from it to tell us they were there. also, we were never informed that the heat and ac is turned on by the maintenance staff- we have no control over when we started those utilities. we moved in in april and by the end of may the third floor was getting a little hot so we tried to turn on the ac. after calling the office we were told it was not started yet. fair enough. a few weeks later we were told that the ac was on but ours was not working. by this time it was june and unbearably hot up there. after THREE visits from maintenance we were told that we needed a whole new unit but they were not sure when we would be able to have it installed. so we went another two weeks without ac. two months after having the new unit installed the ac was not working again. it turns out the freon was leaking. fabulous.
upon moving into our unit it was obvious the previous tenants were smokers and the cleaning staff had done little to get rid of that smell before we moved in. even after 6 months you could still smell it in the closets and cabinets. that and the walls are so thin that the smoke from our next door neighbors seeped in. the neuighbors are an even better story...
the floors are so thin and noisy that our neighbor below us (who is a psychotic invalid) would bang on the wall everytime myself, my husband or my son would move around. how much noise can a one year old make when he walks''' the leasing staff did little to help us resolve this issue. this same man threw bags of peanuts on his balcony so there was a squirrel infestation on ours as well.
another issues is the laundry. there are 12 units in a building and only 2 washers and dryers. add to this that the one family that lived on the first floor had 10 people sharing a two bedroom unit. i suppose they tried to save money by shoving all their laundry into one load (though for $3 a load i sort of understand their reasoning). as a result there was usually one washer working at a time and for a week or two neither one worked. apparently this is what close to a thousand dollars a month gets you.
the biggest issue at canterbury is the office staff. they are incompetent. the property manager is never there so as a result she is not actually managing the property. we were scheduled to transfer to a larger apartment in the same community (for a ton more money to boot). my husband and i both took time off of work, hired a mover, scheduled our utilities to be changed and so on. my husband called to schedule a walk through before we signed the new lease and only at that point did the leasing agent realize that the previous tenants had not vacated yet. did we get an apology' a real explanation' NO! we were told that "these things happen". the corporate office was just as useless.
long story short we decided to "break" our lease and face them in court should they try to collect from us. there are many nicer rentals in the area for roughly the same price. so please take my advice and stay away from canterbury. they suck! uWDgQKY3Vkv8FKIsB8Ax
