I have lived in the CT for about half a year so far. Yes, there are fire alarms (about maybe once a month if you average it out). Yes, the sprinkler systems sometime go off. Yes, the elevators have to go through maintence when something goes wrong (i.e. the sprinklers).

But you know what' I LIKE living here. Very much in fact.

The appartments are spacious and the price is reasonable. Actually, living here (with all utilities paid) is much cheaper than any brownstone i've looked at in Baltimore. There are huge windows in every room, so OF COURSE its going to be a little drafty. duh. But its quite livable, especially since we pay the same no matter how much heat we waste. And quite frankly, I love the windows. They bring in so much natural light.

Furthermore, we have a grocery store and food court (which has the city's best pizza ever) beneath us. We are also lucky enough to be right next to a lot of land that is being converted to green space. With all of these additions springing up in the last year (and connected to our building) OF COURSE things aren't going to work perfectly at first. The reasons we have as many fire alarms and sprinkler botches as we do is because our building also goes through whatever these new buildings do. So, if in the first week of opening, the grocery store has 4 false fire alarms because they're still working the system out, so do we. Its not the end of the world people.

I get so mad that the only reviews the Charles Towers has are from people who have nothing better to do than complain. Yes, its not a perfect living space, but where is' In my opinion, the goods far outweigh the bad, and if you're reading this I urge you to go see it for yourself and take a tour. ALL of the leasing people are fantastic. As are the front desk people - they have always been very nice to me and most of them even know my name, which is quite a feat in a building that has 2 towers of about 30 floors.

In conclusion:

This is a clean, quiet, well organized building that has fallen subject to a couple months of renovations around it and suffered the consequences. It has a great location (about 10 blocks from the harbor and about 3 blocks from midtown) and lots of restaurants and bars around it. The rooms are big and have tons of sunlight, and maintence requests have always been taken care of within one day of being reported. The front desk staff is nice, and while the desk people aren't always the most pleasant, they do the job. The water pressure is good and the heat/AC have always worked for me. Even though not all the elevators work all the time, only once or twice have I had to wait for a considerate amount of time for one (but its a high rise! what do you expect'). The building has free trips to the mall once a month and tons of other group activities. I like living here, and while I can't tell the future, imagine that as long as I'm in baltimore I'll keep living here.

Go see it for yourself, and don't believe everything you read.

Construction has been going on for years. Not for months. Having your apartment flooded by a sprinkler that SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE OFF (no fire) is hard a little inconvenience.

I think someone is on the payroll of Charles Towers (some of the surly office staff live in the building).

Windows are drafty because they are cheap, poorly fitted, single pane windows that can't close or open properly. Also the rubber in the seams is rotting out leading to more draft. They are not draft because they are big. Your ignorance of thermodynamics and construction is vast.

Elevators break down often and one in the South Tower has been out for TWO WEEKS now.

Make sure you SEE an apartment for yourself and ASK some people that live here if you visit. Don't fall for their games.

Yep it's truly a dump. Yep, the sprinklers flood peoples apartments, the elevators are often broken, the windows are drafty, etc. All the bad is true. Be warned.

A miserable place to live, what with the defective sprinkler system, the ancient and unmaintained heating/cooling system, and the rude office personnel. Southern Management seems almost to work extra hard to keep their tenants uncomfortable.
