poor maintenence and management

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2003

While it looks nice on the outside, the poor
maintenence and management are leading to
serious problems. Here are some examples:
1)The first year we were there, it took them a number of months to fix a sewage leak behind our apartments.
2)The second year, our vehicle was stolen from the parking lot. Don't be fooled by the "security" gates: They are not maintained. One entrance gate has been tied open for more than a year. Maintenence says they are too expensive to fix as they break all the time.
3)Our basement storage area was so wet the drywall on the ceiling was crumbling and in some places had fallen down. Most of the stuff we stored there was ruined.
4)The water in the pool was never drained out in the winter and a number of times we actually asked the lifegaurd to check the chlorine levels, they were too low. Our child got gastroenteritis after swimming in the pool. While you can't prove what caused it, we decided to be safe and avoid the pool.
At the end of our first year we were told the
pool would be closed the next Spring as new guidlines required an additional drain or some other work that required digging through the bottom of the pool. This work was never done, although I don't know why.
5)There was a sale of furniture from a "corporate" apartment which was being decommisioned. We were interested in one or
two items, but decided against it when staff
refused to accept a check made out to "Ivymount apartments". They insisted that the check had to be made out to "cash". I wonder what happened to the sale proceeds, along with the large screen TV that seemed priced NOT to sell'
6)Periodically, the water was yellow/brown.
We don't know whose fault this is, but you
might want to consider bottled water if you plan on living there.
7)Don't expect your deposit back, despite any suggestions to the contrary. For example, we were planing on getting our carpet professionally cleaned before we moved out and asked management for a recommendation. We were told not to waste our money as Ivymount always cleaned the carpet between tenants and didn't charge for this. And besides, we were told, our carpet was old and they were planning on replacing it. Imagine our surprise at the $220 charge for the carpet made against our deposit. We also had a problem with the kitchen floor. Tiles kept cracking and coming up. It appeared to be due to either faulty tiles or their installation. Maintence did come and stick back down the broken tiles. However, when we moved out we were charged $840 to replace the kitchen floor.

We have lived in a number of other apartments and had always left with a very amicable relationship with our landlord and their management. Ivymount was a real disappointment. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
