After a year at the Sail Cloth I have experienced the good and along with the bad. Staring with the good:
- Loved the layout of the apartment, very spacious with high ceiling
- Relatively quite building (excluding outside city noise, and walls are thin so if your neighbors are going deaf, you will hear the tv/music/video games)
- Nice rooftop deck, rare to see anyone using it
- New gym equipment (although the gym is on the small side and can get crowded)
- Very friendly staff
- Minor maintenance requests usually addressed within a day
Now for the bad:
- Appliances are extremely outdated(speaking for my apartment, the only new appliance when i moved in was the microwave)
- When my washer broke, it took over 2 weeks to replace it. I was continually told that the new one was on the way, should be installed the next day. When the new washed was finally installed, it came with a broken lid and was not exactly new. My assumption was that it was moved from an empty apartment.
- Reported that the dryer was not functioned properly and that the door was jammed packed with years of lint with no way for me to remove it. Reported that it was a potential fire hazard. After the experience with the washer, when the dryer was not addressed in a timely manner I got tired of complaining. Glad to see they were concerned.
- Was never informed when I signed my lease that they would be replacing the roof. Given that I rented an apartment on the top floor, this may have had a minor impact on my decision (at the very least on what apartment I would have rented). Needless to say, I had to deal with being woken up at or before 7 am by extremely loud noises as they worked on the roof above my apartment. Then I had to deal with the roof leaking after it was replaced because it was not done correctly.
- My apartment is on the 5th floor (top floor) and an air conditioning unit on the roof above my apartment is not functioning properly causing a rattling/racket/motor noise above the bedroom. The noise occurs at random hours and varies in volume, however it tends to be loud enough to disrupt the normal sleeping hours. After complaining about the noise for a week (and attempting to sleep with ear plugs), it was corrected for a few days but has decided to return to torture me some more.
- And my personal favorite - The apartment has a parking garage with valet parking (understandable because cars must be blocked in to accommodate all residents). For liability reasons, you are not allowed to park your own car and must go through the valet to get your car out. Well it just so happened that when the valet was getting my car out, the key broke off in the ignition of the car. It was the only key to the car and the car is an older model so the manufacturer no longer has the key code to make another. I ended up having to call a locksmith to come replace the ignition starter (so now I have a key to start the car but not to open the locks). I need my car to get to work outside the city, so I had to take the day off, pay for the locksmith out of my pocket, and now have to fight for the property manager to take responsibility.
Overall, I loved my apartment at first, but now I am counting down the days I have left. In my experience, the price you pay to live there is not worth the stress/hassle of trying to live comfortably. Best of luck to you if you decide to live there. My only advice would be to avoid the 5th floor.
