Nothing extraordinary, but not a complete dump either... for the price, you get quite a lot of sq. footage compared to other apts. around the Homewood (Hopkins) campus. If you can get into the 104 building, apt's A's & B's are probably the best ones - offering the most room.
I had a double with study, which we converted into a 3 bedroom; also had separate living & dining rooms. Overall, not too shabby for the price, though it seems to be going up every year.
We had our fair shares of problems from blackouts to parts of the ceiling fall down. The building is old, but this should not happen - the ceiling in the dining room literally caved down (small 2x2 sq ft) numerous times and was patched fairly quickly. However; it was only patched, never really fixed (probably a leak upstairs).
Also had mice (probably about 7 in 2 yrs) (yes we killed them w/traps), despite everything that we did to attempt to stay clean... seen a bunch of bugs, but definitely not a problem.
We also had a sink problem - it got clogged and literally exploded and flooded the bathroom, but this the only apt that it happened - supposedtly its fixed.
Because the building is old it lacks: central air (we have individual window AC units), garbage disposal (in the sink) or a trash chute (dumpster between the buildings) and other things like that.
The stove, fridge, and microwave were pretty old too.
I never moved because I hate moving, but overall it wasn't TOO bad... I wouldn't really recommend to anyone that's not a student though.
They have recently replaced the windows and blinds in all apt's which adds a nice touch, the elevators are upgraded though slower now.
Can't expect too much from a 1930's building that probably hasn't been renovated since the 60's.
P.S. Parking is only street parking - hope you're good at parallel - but there's usually enough spots along the street - I would not recommend having a really nice car.

oh yeah: they do pay for heat & water... you pay gas (stove - minimal usually about $10/month) and electricity (A LOT in the summer - otherwise okay)
