I'm lucky that I've never had THAT much of a problem. I've lived here 5 years. I love my apartment. But, here's what I'll say.

- Office staff changes almost DAILY it seems. They know nothing. Get everything in writing.
- The area is nice but it can be unsafe at times. My car was stolen (I got it back), and a few months later someone shot Elmer's glue along the side (WTF'). After I bought a NEW car, some drunk must have flown through the lot and smashed my car.
- Maintenance is generally quick but you can almost NEVER get them on the phone. Have to leave a message. If you ----- to Aimco.com about poor maintenance they will respond fast.
- My appliances are old but they work, that's all I can say.
- You DO see where your money goes, which I appreciate very much. They replaced the windows/balcony doors this year. They put in a security system on the front doors. They replaced the hallway/stairway carpeting. They do roach exterminations every few months. They are currently in the process of installing Verizon Fios.
- They often suck at giving you ample notice on things, but I have complained numerous times to Bernard and it's gotten a lot better (before, they would give you a notice the day before that they were doing exterminating and you have to clean out your whole kitchen).
- Noise is so-so. The walls are thin but I am lucky to live around quiet neighbors (with the exception of those downstairs - the kid stomps around like an elephant). Others might not be so lucky. Music HAS been a problem around here.
- Read the lease. They have "community rules". Make them do something if someone isn't following them.
- We had a fire in our building in the fall and Bernard was right there when it was being put out. He spoke to all of us. Thankfully my apartment was not damaged but it took FOREVER to get a new door since mine was busted down from the firefighters. Apparently all the doors had to be custom-made, I'm assuming because the building has shifted over the years. I felt a little unsafe using a busted door and lock, but my new door is wonderful.
- Parking where I am is never an issue. Only if I come home after 11pm but that's rare for me.

Eventually I want to move to a bigger place but I'm terrified of winding up in a hellhole!

Actually it's really the whole USA tenants that you are complaining about. No one shows up when they have town hall meetings. The office can't police tenants. Tenants can. I've got a family with kids that seem to spy and harrass other tenants. In front of their adults they try to harrass my dog. They gather around the entrance. The problem is that tenants should get together and ask the office to let them use the Residents website. It's provided by AIMCO. That can't be done on a one by one basis. I've tried to talk to tenants about being a community but they respond they don't live here. They just use it as a place to go in and out from. So no one cares about any one else. If I had a partner I could do more but being single I can't do a thing. I do show up whenever they have a town meeting. The last one was in the two buildings on my block where they are updating the hot/water input. I learned a whole lot about the gas/water/sewer items on my utility bill. Hardly any one showed up. I have 22 neighbors, some of whom may be part of a "friendly network" and secret as far as I may know. It's possible. I keep away from everyone. They are scary. I think the front business office might be scared too. Bullies exist everywhere in the USA. They even teach their kids to put sticks and stones to keep the security doors open all night. I bet people even in wealthy condos don't know that this might be happening there too. Who knows what goes on at night when everyone is sleeping. All communities need neighborhood watch 24x7. All tenants should be caring about all the other tenants. If adults don't teach their kids this, then who will? Your kids are not my responsibility. No different than my dog being your responsibility. Yes I talk to my own adult kids this way too. Even my granddaughter. They are not happy with me;)
