Living with Big Brother

The place is a solid "ok". I would recommend for a short-term rent, but nothing more. The rules are numerous and, many times, arbritrary. No showering after 10 p.m. and no "non-white" curtains allowed are just two of the rules awaiting tenants in this pet-unfriendly, fun-unfriendly building. As long as you obey by the laundry list of rules (no grills, quiet hours beginning at 7 p.m.) you are unlikely to encounter problems, but don't expect maintenance when you really need it. My apartment wasn't even so much as cleaned when I moved into it. I had to toss out the previous tenants belongings-even their toothbrush-and the place clearly hadn't seen a mop or vacuum in years.

As an owner of one of the units in Parkside, it should be noted that the condominiums in Parkside are individually owned. Approximately 45% of the units are rented out by individual owners. It sounds like this renter rented a unit from a neglectful owner who doesn't clean between renters, doesn't respond quickly to maintenance issues, and has tacked on some rules above and beyond the Condo Association's rules. Parkside actually has an excellent, inexpensive maintenance program that, in my experience, has been quick to respond to maintenance requests. Perhaps the owner of this renter's unit is slow to call the maintenance staff or too cheap to pay for the service. I'm not aware of any rules prohibiting showers after 10:00 p.m. and quiet hours starting at 7:00. If that was true, I'd be written up every other night. Odds are these are rules the owner tacked on to this rental or there's a crank in a nearby unit who complains about every bump and thud after dark, which is a downer but hardly the fault of the Condo Association or representative of all the rental units in Parkside. (Parkside is a complex of several dozen buildings, each with a half-dozen or so individual condos.) The no grilling and no pet rules are true. However, Rock Creek Park is less than a mile from the complex with plenty of outdoor grilling areas. As for the no pet rule, unfortunately it is pretty strictly enforced and it's part of the Association's by laws, so it would require a 2/3 vote by all owners to change the rule, which isn't going to happen anytime soon. Overall, though, Parkside is a nice, quiet community, very close to Metro and shopping and close enough to the beltway to be convenient to everything in the DC area.

I have lived at Parside for over 4 years. overall, the location is excellent, gourmet shopping and cultural activities within a short drive. I love the well maintained pool and tennis courts. Rock creek offers pleasant biking and nature rabbit, deer and birding.

Agree -- the management office is OUTSTANDING. I've lived in other condo communities and truly this one is the most responsive and very friendly. I love it here! But the no-pets rule is a big minus, and I'll eventually move because of it. I want to have a dog someday. With Rock Creek Park right there in our backyard, it would be a dog-owner's dream.

Um, the apartments here at Parkside are INDIVIDUALLY OWNED. The landlord, not Parkside, is responsible for cleaning the apartment, upkeep, etc. I can't emphasize that enough. It sounds like this guy had a crappy landlord. But it seems a little silly to blame that on Parkside.I've lived here 2 years, and I've loved it. My landlords were nice, my apartment was clean and well-maintained, and I thought the Parkside monthly newsletters were a cute touch. In want of news, sometimes the newsletter does print things like "please remember to be courteous to your neighbors" or "please remember to not slam your front door." If that's being Big Brother, I'll take it.

I agree with this posting. A very uptight community with unpleasant residents. I live nearby and walked my dog through the community once...I must have gotten YELLED at by 3-4 residents screaming from their balconies.
