Something's Wrong Here

I wanted to live in this building. There were many appealing aspects about it upon first viewing; good price/quality ratio, nice enough amenities, washer/dryer in unit. While it's still a bit of a trek to either the Medical Center or Bethesda metro stop, the location was still pretty good. For all of these reasons, I decided to start the leasing process.
I filled out the necessary paperwork and gave them my application fee. That was the last time I felt comfortable with the idea of living there. I was given different information concerning my credit and background check status each time I contacted them - sometimes from the same person. I also was astounded by the lack of attention they paid me considering I was a potential tenant. They simply didn't call me. Like a previous post stated, I waited until a couple days before my scheduled move-in date when I received startling news. I called them, panicked now that I was scheduled to move out of my other apartment, hoping to get the final approval I needed to come in and sign the lease.
After I told them my name so they could verify my status, I was told that none of my paperwork had even been started. This was particularly heart-breaking since I didn't have enough time to start the leasing process anywhere else. I ended up being forced to move to another unit in the building I was already in (I suppose I was lucky there was even one available).
While I was disappointed with the whole process, I see the silver lining as not being in a building with perhaps the most incompetent management office I've ever seen in an apartment (and that's saying something). I also was troubled to find that there were several robberies in the apartment according to Bethesda police records when the woman showing me the apartment couldn't "think of any break-ins offhand."
Everybody knows that apartment leasing offices are a collection of incompetent donkeys - but these ones seemed worst than usual. Be careful. And if you're going to try to rent an apartment from this place, make sure to be hyper-vigilant in contacting the leasing office or you may end up out in the cold.
