GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm where do I begin' I'll start with the good things because that will take less time.
The very best thing- and the reason for my even living here as long as I have is the SPACE. The apartments are huge. If you're lucky enough to get one that can hold onto its ceiling you're in business. Also all of the building problems have inspired an overall feeling of comraderie within the building. People hold doors and elevators for one another regularly. (Because you NEVER know if or when its gonna come back) People help with bags during those often necessary trips up the stairs when the elevator isn't working.
In the time since my roommate and I have lived here we have experienced/are experiencing the following:
-An attempted rape of a cleaning lady in our laundry room
-A shooting in an apt in our bldg
-A double homocide in one of the other bldgs.
-Multiple tenant/tenant, tenant/personnel, tenant/non tenant FIGHTS (physical) in lobbies and parking lots
-RANDOM FIRE DRILLS AT all times of the night (people pulling fire alarms- not just kids)
-Strange drunk men SLEEPING in the stairwell
-Elevator is either not working at all, or is only servicing certain floors that day.
-Elevator OFTEN makes special stops between floors for those who live there.
-Various SMELLS throughout the building
-Various LIQUIDS on elevator floors
-Broken security door
-trash in lobby
-lights out in hallways and parking lots until a minimum of 10 complaints are made (I guess they wanna be sure its REALLY out)
-floods of epic proportions in our apartment from a VACANT apt above us.
-random vandalism by maintenance- we've come home on at least two occassions to find that they've come in to fill requests we haven't made and left perfectly intact walls, floors and counters DAMAGED for MONTHS
-maintenance requests unanswered unless someones dying.
-THOSE DAMN BIRDS- we are REALLY held hostage in the winter by these birds and it is NOT a game. I've NEVER seen anything like this. Someone should call National Geographic.
-We've had the same ceiling in the same bathroom replaced 3 times. (Its threatening to come down again by the way.)
-Hot water is a priviledge not a right. Take a shower while you can because it may not be there tomorrow or
-Brown water
-No heat in midwinter despite MULTIPLE SHUT OFFS for REPAIRS, at least that's what they tell us they're doing but it's never fixed for longer than a week.(This is also related to the lack of hot water)
-Ghetto, lazy staff that acts as if you're truely wrecking their day by complaining.
Granted I will admit MANY of these issues are made worse by SOME trifling tenants, but there is a very large circle of tenants who care and are trying to make things better.
As for my roommate and I, we've always managed to find some good/humor in MOST of these situations. We're young and this is temporary for us. Taking the stairs is great exercise as is the sprint in the dark from you car to the door before you get MARKED from above by the birds or robbed. We've become quite handy with our own tools so we only call maintenance for things we can't fix or learn to laugh it. But I really feel sorry for people who HAVE no other option. Some tenants could really be better tenants but the management could try giving a damn also. ESPECIALLY for what they're charging to live in this slum.
