Mixed feelings about Archstone - Long Review. A lot to say

I moved into building 3645 - 2 bedroom\2 bath for $1295 on a 12 month lease. The apartment itself was lovely. They have an extra large, oval shaped tub in both bathrooms that I absolutely loved! The apartments are gated, have crownmolding, a washer and dryer, dishwasher, two bathrooms and alarm systems. The neighborhood was very quiet in my opinion. I had good neighbors who were all professionals. There were a few kids in the building but they were well behaved. Someone did get their car vadalized overnight but I never had any problems. There was plenty of parking but not necessarily in front of your building. Many times I had to park across the property and walk a ways to my building. I never had a problem with anyone bothering me though. I did see roaches when I first moved in but they were coming from the apartment next door. I sprayed and put down roach proof in the kitchen and hall bathroom and never saw anymore. The surrounding area is lovely. There is a park a couple of blocks up that has a walking trail and duck pond. I always felt safe walking in the area. There is plenty of entertainment and shopping in the area also. Now, on to the negatives...When it came time for me to renew my lease, I had the option of paying $1500 for another 12 month lease or $1700 for month to month. There was no way I would ever pay those kinds of prices for an apartment. On top of the overpriced rent I had to pay, gas, electric, water and trash pickup. I hurried up and moved. Plus, maintenance has one crackhead on staff who I caught outside my apartment with a bag of keys searching for the one that fit my lock. I didn't have any maintenance requests in at the time so there was no reason for him to come inside my apartment. I complained to the rental office but they just shrugged it off. This maintenance man was about 5'7", darkskinned, skinny, with plaits. Not the tall darkskinned maintenance man who lives on the property. Luckily, I had the good sense to get my locks changed when I first moved in so maintenance didn't have the key to get in. This also lead to me eventually getting nasty letters from the rental office threatening to change my locks if I didn't provide them with a key to my apartment. They accused me of being in violation of my lease. When I told them about the maintenance man trying to get into my apartment they just shrugged it off. This lead me to believe the rental office was aware of the problem and was ok with it. This along with the inflated rent was the reason I moved. If they didn't have a crackhead on staff who was obviously trying to get into my apartment to see what he could steal and the rent was the going rate instead of this ridiculous amount I would have stayed a couple of years. Overall, I would recommend these apartments to couples. Because of the maintenance problem I wouldn't recommend to a single woman. Just be aware that they will try to hike your rent up AND maintenance is not to be trusted.

I forgot to mention that if you live in an apartment that is adjacent to the stairwell the master bedroom will absorb every step a person takes up and down the stairs. The first night I spent in the apartment I was awakened by something sounding like several small explosions. What it was was my neighbor from upstairs walking down the steps in her highheel flip flops. The second bedroom was very peaceful since it wasn't next to the stairwell. Also, the shopping Center down Excalibur Road is very loud first thing in the morning. I don't know if it's the delivery trucks or something else but around 5:30am everyday I would hear very loud banging sounds from the shopping center. The other thing is some of the neighbors would bag their trash and put it in the hallway for the cleaning staff to pickup the next day instead of taking it to the compactor. And, the compactor overflowed quite a bit. Twice I had to call the fire department because of my neighbor smoking cigarettes outside the building and then throwing the butts into the mulch. Both times a small fire was started.
