Nice place before moving on

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2008
I've lived at HHW for 3 years, and am moving out because I've purchased my own place.
My apartment pros: it's huge. It's a 2 bedroom, 2 bath and about 1300 sq. feet. I like that. There are plenty of closets and the appliances, while dated, work just fine. Nice new windows. I am fortunate enough to NOT overlook that GIANT construction mess.
My apartment cons: White. Everything is white. Carpet, walls, even tile in the bathroom and kitchen and my cabinets. ZZzzz. There's no personality to the units at all. The laundry can be annoying, if you live where people don't care that you want to do yours, too. I can hear other people. I got new neighbors upstairs and I can hear them all the time through the vents. I can also smell my neighbors smoking - it seeps through my door. It's terrible.
But for an apartment that's had no work done on it, it's held up very well.
Building pros: nice staff, good amenities, great location for the most part, and it's well kept. Parking is relatively cheap and if you park away from other people, you'll be OK. Lots of old people driving = dings.
Building cons: too much work done and no recourse for comfort. If they're going to be redoing the whole building, they should cut long time residents some slack. There's lots of construction noise from the on-site work.
My biggest con is the change in neighborhood, which has reflected in the price of the units at HHW. There's a monster of a construction project going on across the street (well, on Willard). It has lead to a lot of day laborers hanging around at the metro (which as a woman walking alone in the early morning to get to work, can be annoying). I don't think they are going away any time soon. The traffic is going to be horrendous once everything in that project opens. It's already bad enough. Street parking for guests will also be more annoying. Because of everything coming up, HHW has raised the rents. A one bedroom now starts in the 1700s which is more than my mortgage. It's ridiculous. A one bedroom used to be in the 1300s and 1400s, which is reasonable for the area and amenities.
I recommend the building, but think the area is changing too much in the wrong direction for me to think I'd enjoy staying. Good thing I'm not!
