Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2007

I am originally from CA where life tends to be a little more surreal and a lot more expensive. When I moved to this area 4 years ago, I met with a very nice lady in the Management office who showed me an apaprtment almost three times as large as what I was renting in San Diego for almost 3x the rent I am now paying at Briarcliff (okay, with utilities maybe only 2x).

I really like my apartment, it's quieter than most (all of my local friends complain about hearing every step their neighbors take)and the amenities are great -- thanks for re-doing the tennis courts -- and the pool is awesome. I lost my job about two years ago right around my renewal time and it took me a while to get back on my feet. I thought I was going to have to give up my apartment because I knew I was going to fall behind on my bills. I was humiliated to call the managment office and tell them until I spoke with the people there.

The first person I spoke with was a leasing agent -- maybe it was the manager -- at any rate, this person listened to me and took time to locate my folder and make notes about our conversation for the main Property Manager...I should mention I came in on a very busy Sunday and yet I still felt like this person cared about what was going on in my life. She commented that she would pass the information on to the right person and that I would get a follow up call during that week.

I didn't wait...I called on Monday...at first I spoke with the leasing agent again, and stressing my anxiety about needing an answer, she forwarded my call to the other property manager. I could sense this was a busy MOnday, but this person also took the time to listen to my problem and reassured me that she would work with the Property Manager to figure out a solution for me. She also told me she would add another week to my notice period while I contemplated my options. Again, my information was taken down and I was assured again of a follow-up from the Manager.

On Tuesday, I received a call from the Managment office. The Manager left a message that she had received my informaiton and that she would indeed be willing to work with me again to come up with a solution. When I called back I barely had to say anything at all. The manager seemed to know just what I needed to hear at that crisis time in my life and it was evident that her staff had briefed her thoroughly about my situation.

I was relieved that my options included more than just breaking my lease and leaving my apartment and that I could stay at Briarcliff. In CA everyone moves to get the best rent deal and you can tell that the owners run their businesses this way giving very little back to their residents. When I moved to MD I was looking forward to staying put and that's just what I've been able to do. Just recently, my apartment recived new windows and a new A/C unit. Some of my local friends live in places where they never see things being updated in their community and their "managers" are people who work in offices in other cities or states...That may be fine with some people, but like that other person who wrote in, I know that these folks care about me.
