Good Graduate Student Living

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
My husband and I chose the mid-rise at Seven Springs for its clean, safe-feeling environment and tidy apartments. After a year of living here, we've chosen to extend our lease. Contrary to the complaints of other residents, we were informed that the rates only increase 5.5% per year, which is a fairly standard amount considering the area.
Maintenance has always addressed problems promptly, we've had no issues with theft (so far), and the fitness facilities and pool are both accessible and satisfactory. We love that utilites are included, which makes the 1100 a month a real steal, and the teacher discount is a big bonus for grad students. Also, it's close to the university, has a grocery store just across the street, and plenty of parking. Not a bad way to go.
Round 2: A Year Later
In August, my husband and I will leave Seven Springs for an overpriced dump of an apartment in downtown DC. We're doing it to cut down our commute--but if we could have our choice, we would stay in Seven Springs in a heartbeat.
After two years, we still have not had one problem with bugs. We're not clean freaks, but we don't leave out rotting food, and that seems to eliminate problems with pests. The one time our sink broke, maintenance was up to fix it within an hour--and that was late on a Friday evening. We can park right outside of the door, we're surrounded by small, working-class families and young adults, and the pool and leasing office look like they could be featured on a postcard.
We have had some problems with the thermostat, but then again, we don't have to pay an extra dime to keep our place at 71 degrees in the summer. The hot water is unusually good for an apartment, and laundry machines are on every floor. The property management group has invested a lot recently to make the lobbies in each building look snazzy, and the grounds are clean and safe.
So, a year after I first rated this place, I have to maintain my previous high score. Check it out for yourself, take the bad reviews with a grain of salt (the happy residents don't often look at apartment-review websites), and make your own decision.
