Great location relative to UMD. Bad residence for mature/graduate students.

I am in the last month of my one-year lease at University View. I was a first year graduate student during my stay at the view. I found the building to be very comfortable. It offers outstanding amenities, and an unparalleled location relative to campus. The rent is high for the area, and the rooms are laid out in a dorm-like format. The tenants are mostly undergraduates. From what I've observed, a good number of freshmen were housed in the building. Although I am unfamiliar with UMD's undergraduate housing policies, I find it surprising that first years would live in what is ostensibly an off-campus apartment building. Despite this, the bulk of the residents are probably second or third years. As would be expected, many of the residents act like first years and sophomores. There was very loud partying, destruction of common area property, and generally infantile behavior in the building. I anticipated this, so I selected a two-bedroom suite in the middle of a row of two bedroom suites. My thinking was that the partying would be concentrated at the 6-person suites. I was correct about this. My neighbors were very quiet, and I enjoyed my room greatly. The loud music and destructive behavior was generally confined to the 6-person suites, although a lot of the destruction happened away from those suites. On my floor, some of the residents made a hobby of destroying the hallway lamps during the weekends. The building threatened to take action (by fining the people who live near the destruction, which would have been me!!!). This did not stop the destruction, and management never fined the residents. For the price of a room in this building, it is a luxury apartment. The residents don't treat it like this, so it would be most accurately described as a dorm. If you are past your undergraduate days of rowdy behavior, this is simply the wrong place to live. Some other points: maintenance is fantastic. The front office staff is mostly helpful, and friendly. There were some building issues throughout the year that resulted from the structure being brand new, but they seem to be resolving those problems. Parking is expensive in the building ($80/month). I parked in lot 3, which was about $300 for the whole year, and is a 15-20 minute walk from the building. Final verdict: don't live here if you are looking for a more mature environment. If you are an undergraduate looking for a social scene (and your parents give you lots of rent money), you'll have a great time here.
