Good and Bad

From: -Anonymous-
Date posted: 8/29/2008
Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008

The good news:
* Apartments are huge. Our 3 bedroom is bigger than some 3 bedroom houses I've been in here in MD.
* Apartments are pretty quiet. You can hear upstairs neighbors walking and neighbors' plumbing noises, but otherwise there is fairly little noise that comes in that's not directly outside your door.
* Parking is pretty good. It is not covered or reserved, but I can usually find a spot close to my building.
* Friendly Staff. Whenever I have had to deal with the office staff or maintenance staff, they have always been nice & pleasant to deal with.
* Washer & dryer in unit. They are small, but they're in the unit, which is SO much better than having to use laundry facilities, especially if you have kids.
* Water is included & the hot water rocks.
* Our heat & air works well. Apartment is always kept warm/cool...despite the leaky windows (see below).
* Landscaping is well-kept & they're pretty good at not leaf-blowing at 6:00 am on Saturdays (I've lived someplace that did that...)
* Nice views. Some of the apartments have very nice views.

The bad news:
* Maintenance is rather slow. They are very friendly, but not terribly responsive. In my experience, using the phone number (emergency number or regular number) is not at all effective. I've never gotten a response using the phone numbers. I am not a whiny tenant. I don't like having people in my space, so I only call maintenance when something important is completely broken (heat, A/C, major appliance, etc) or there is some kind of hazard (broken windows, flooding, fire, etc). In my experience, if you want something done, you have to go to the office & complain...sometimes multiple times, and don't expect any kind of communication or update unless you go in the office & pester them. This is my biggest complaint. Communicate with me & let me know what's going on, please!
* Windows are terrible. The other reviewers are correct that the windows suck. They are single pane & they leak very badly. When there is wind outside, there is a breeze inside. We can watch our blinds blow in the wind...our electricity bills are obscene. On the upshot, we don't ever have to worry about adequate fresh air in the apartment. Also, the screens don't really fit, so we can't open a window without letting in a whole ecosystem of bugs, leaves, & other debris.
* Not much storage. There is no outdoor storage & only 2 closets outside the bedrooms.
* Office will not accept packages. Not a big deal, but somewhat annoying. This is the only apartment complex I have ever lived in (& I've been in quite a few over the years...) that does not accept packages.
* No perks for renewing lease. Again, not a huge deal, but this is one of the very, very few complexes I've lived in that doesn't offer any kind of perk (carpet cleaning, etc) for lease renewal...especially since the rent went up & we still have stuff that needs fixing.
* A fair amount of bugs. We get tons of giant crickets & a fair number of spiders. We had a problem with yellow jackets getting in last year, but the bug people came out & took care of that.

The summary:
These apartments are relatively old, so they have a lot of wear & tear. Appliances are also fairly old & are not always completely reliable. When we first moved in, we were very bummed at the quality of the apartment for the price, but after a while, we've seen some of the nice things, too. These apartments are not the greatest, but they are not the worst. The buildings are pretty solid & you can't hear your neighbor's TV or fights. There are kids around that could stand to be more courteous & attentive, but they are certainly not the worst I've seen. Generally, they are not a problem...just watch out when you're driving through the parking lot. For the most part, we are comfortable here.

My biggest complaint, really, is just getting timely maintenance. I feel bad for having to complain so much because everyone is very nice, but when something needs to be fixed, it needs to be fixed. If the staff is buried in life-threatening crises, I understand, but TELL me that. Don't leave me hanging wondering if anyone is ever going to do anything.

No place is perfect & there are jerks/idiots/losers everywhere. Our neighbors have always been pretty friendly, & I generally do not feel unsafe when out late at night. All I can really say is that this has been one of the least irritating apartments I've lived in when I weigh out what I like about it against what bugs me.
