Good for the area, anyway

I lived at Tamar Meadow for about 15 months. The location is great, and you get MUCH MORE for your money there (in terms of space and amenities) compared to other apartment communities nearby. I thought that the apartments were very pretty, and there is a nice pool area. The landscaping is well-maintained, and I never had too much trouble with parking. There are tons of trails and good walking areas around the complex (good if you have a dog).

The maintenance staff is LIGHTNING fast in taking care of whatever you need, large or small. The head maintenance man, Joe, is VERY friendly and remembers everyone who lives there (and the work he's done for them). He does a good job, plus he's personable and nice and always says hello. He does more towards making living there pleasant than any other person on staff. (If he were running the whole show they'd be better off.)

The staff who work in the leasing office were pretty much useless - they couldn't help me when I needed assistance. The only useful person there is the manager (she was admittedly very professional and courteous), but oftentimes one of the other staff would say the manager would call me back and I wouldn't get a return call. It seemed to take too much work on my part to get the help I needed.

Also, I may have just been lucky before, but in other apartment complexes where I've lived, the staff would throw little parties and such for the residents - "get to know you" events where they'd grill free burgers at the community center or invite everyone to the pool or something. But there were no events like this at Tamar. There really isn't a feeling of being a community there, that I could tell - it's all a bunch of people sectioned off into their own little apartments, ignoring one another.

One of the main drawbacks for me in my particular experience was the apartment downstairs that had seemingly 20 men living in it. They would loiter outside at all hours, watching all the women go by, prompting a sign to be put up (in Spanish no less) that told them to stop. It made me realize that there was not much of a sense of security in the complex. Other than that, the neighbors were mostly okay. Some screaming children downstairs, people walking around upstairs - pretty normal stuff. Night times were quiet, though.

One big plus for me was that the management is so unobtrusive that they never knew (or said anything) about the fact I had a dog that wasn't on the lease (and I didn't pay a pet deposit). Definitely a "hands off" style of management - it's private. You never see the management nosing around the apartment buildings (although that may not really be a plus, unless you're hiding a dog too!).

When I moved out, they were very flexible in extending my lease, which I thought was nice (but then, there was no one in line to take over my apartment). However, to collect the final rent due, they turned me over to a collection agency before even sending me a final bill. They claimed that this is standard procedure but that has never happened to me at prior apartment communities. Whatever the reasoning behind it, I did not appreciate my (or my PARENTS!) being called by a collection agency AT ALL! Plus, the final bill was wrong (I was overcharged) and I had to make several calls to straighten it out. It made the moving out process pretty difficult and it left a bad final impression for me, which was reinforced well over a month later when I received a certified letter - it was my final bill, 10 weeks late and (obviously) completely useless!!

All in all I would say that Tamar was okay. It could've been a lot better if the office staff were more helpful or friendly. (I would've traded a pet deposit for a better experience overall.) However, it also could've been a lot worse. If I had to choose, I would probably live there again, but only because it's the best apartment complex in that specific area.
