Renting gives you choices...

I have to agree with herlionsden33 on some points. We are living in an apartment community which tends to be very transient, so each new tenant is a sort of crap shoot. I think the management has taken great strides to make the community livable and safe. Despite how the staff may feel, they seem to be attentive and patient, which at times a distraught tenant is too emotionally invested to see clearly. I've been here for some time and have seen the property manager grow and learn her way around just like any other new person. This is a brand new community that offers many pluses, a pool, an exercise room, a great walkable community with shopping and dining a stones throw away. I find the traffic noise, car and plane, more annoying than anything else. I also like that having been priced out of the housing market, I pay no property tax, if it's broke-I don't fix it, my grass is cut and snow is shoveled and a few times a year I can head out to the community area, be it the pool or the office for a little fun - Holiday party, pool party, etc. I think everyone has a different experience and some people may rightly feel ripped off. NO one is right or wrong here, so instead of pointing out the negatives, either in the neighborhood or the poster, let's try to make it a better community by showing our pride through our actions. If I read these posts long enough, I'd figure maybe I shouldn't live here either, not only is the community questionable but the people who live here seem mean spirited. I, personally, have visited every community in the Columbia area, what we have here is really nice and the large luxury homes next to us only add value. It hasn't all been perfect for me, I could complain too, but I can see it for what it is and act accordingly. Best part of it all is that if you are unhappy, you get to leave when your lease is up. Once you buy a house you kind of get stuck. So take that for what it is worth and if you end up leaving because your experience was not as nice as others, you can chalk it up as experience and try somewhere new.
Either way .. enjoy your stay . . I think we have a fairly nice neighborhood and I hope at some point you can sit by the pool with a cold drink and watch the clouds float by and realize, eh for apartment living this aint so bad . ..

Most of your post I agree with. The staff is very nice. The place looks decent and overall is friendly in atmosphere. I disagree about the noise (neighbors, cars, kids playing in the street, etc). That's the biggest issue, next to the high electric bills (prob. because of the little insulation in the walls and leaky windows.)
"The large luxury homes next to us only add value." That doesn't really make sense. Apartments don't hold value for renters. Maybe to the company that owns them it adds value, though, which would explain the high rent. ;)

I agree with you on the noise issue, the more I thought about it. And I think I was trying to equate the luxury homes with a better neighborhood, if that makes any sense. I think you are right about the company making out in the value department though. The high rent may just be an aftershock of the ridiculous housing market. Renters are suffering and ultimately losing out....we don't pay our rent .. we get tossed, not federal assistance.. eh...what are you gonna do.
Thanks for your response, always nice to have a little perspective from a fellow renter =D

Thanks for agreeing with me pricedout. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who can take the good with the bad and take it from there. But as for the utility bill problem, it's not JUST the apartments. Take a look at your BGE bill, they increased the rates from last year. So with the constuction of the buildings PLUS BGE being the only provider in the area it all adds up to high electricity bills. They can charge what ever they want because they are our only option and they know it.
