After a few days of continuous thinking about this, I still feel that it was maintenance. I wrote the previous post while waiting for the police. I want to give you the whole story, be fair, and let you decide. The Officer discovered the bar not pushed completely down, I give it some thought. I then questioned how could the top lock be on and the bar down. He couldnāt answer that. My friend, who was visiting that night, and I looked at the patio lock. My patio door is locked with a metal piece screwed in the frame (wood); the lock on the patio door lifts up to hook onto the metal piece on the frame. The metal piece was broken in two (both pieces still screwed in the frame, the part that the door latches onto pulled out some, but screw still in the wood), but door still locked. I checked the bedroom windows, no sign of entry. The very next morning, I went to the rental office and told Gary, who assured me that it was not done by maintenance and then described to me how it could have been done and said thieves can do anything. He said if a person didn't want to make it look like someone was in they could rest the bar on the door and close it, bar sliding down the door. That is true, but how could they lock the patio (metal piece in tact), put the bar down, and lock the top lock. Gary was very good with discussing, and not getting upset or angry, he help me stay calm. I am a person with a quick and bad temper. Gary wanted nothing but for me to not be upset with maintenance. I told him I didnāt know who did it, but I am not a person to carry a grudge. God has taken care of my battles so far; why not let him continue' During our conversation, Gary did tell me that he was not supposed to tell me, but another apartment had been broken into the same day as I was. I walked home, went straight for the camera and took pictures. Maintenance came and I watched. When he went to open the patio door it wouldnāt, he pulled the door with force, like you would when you are trying to pull it all the way open. That assured me that the nail was not stripped from the wood, as it would have easily came out when maintenance pulled on it. If that part of the metal never came out how did the person get in. Now on to the killer part; my father came over and I was demonstrating Garyās theory with the bar resting on the door and closing it to make it look as though nothing was different. I opened the door, lifted the bar, placed it on the door, and it popped out toward the apartment. Thatās when it hit me; it was impossible for the person to do that because the bar had been that way since I moved in. I didnāt think about it because I had that door closed for so long I forgot all about the defects, I took a short clip with my digital camera. The person that robbed us took two cell phones and an Xbox with my sonās favorite game. I canāt say for sure the Xbox and my phone was taken Thursday, but my sonās phone was taken Friday, which makes me think that everything was taken Friday. My son was taking pictures with his phone Thursday night and irritating his younger brother (with the noise the camera made with taking the picture), which led to an argument; thatās how I know it was in the home Thursday. My phone was my spare (just purchased a new one), and was left on my dresser. The Xbox was inside of a TV cabinet with doors, not visible. My sonās phone (no more than a weeks worth of service) was on and sitting on his dresser because he didnāt want to take it to school. There were a lot of things that had value, but not taken. A thief would not make a call from a stolen cell, but a call was made from my sonās phone. A thief would know that the Xbox system plugs to the tv through rca (think thatās what they are called, the red, yellow, and white) plugs, the person unscrewed my cable. A thief would not sit there and take time to unscrew because he wouldnāt care. The funny thing is usually around 8 a.m. maintenance is at my building, cleaning. Iāve seen one, sometimes two; on the mornings I stayed home. I would see them when I come from dropping my kids at school. When they are there, they are in and out of the building. They leave their bucket on the sidewalk, so you know they are there even if you donāt see them. Is it a coincident that they were not there this morning, or you think a thief is that bold to actually break into my apartment knowing someone is around' 8 a.m. people are leaving for work, going to school, etc. To have gotten in through my patio it would have took some time.
If you would like to see the pictures, or clip, just e-mail me and I will send them to you. Maybe you can give an opinion as to how all this was done.

First of all I have been a resident here for 15 years and have never had my apartment broken into or had maintenance come to my house when they were no expected. After reading what you posted it sounds more like a child broke into your place. What would a grown man making money need to brake into your apartment for, and not take things like jewlery, or money. If it was an inside job, then why did no one see them? If it was an inside job, then howcome they did not take larger or more expensive items? It is easy to get into someones apt, no matter where they live from the window or patio. That is why there is ADT, night pins, and night bars. Doral is a great complex, but the problem is that people are not taking the right measures to protect themselves. I think that the poor maintenance guys who do all that they can to help out the residents are being used as scapegoats when honestly they would drop what they are doing to help us out. You can ask all of us residents who have lived here for 5 (and there is a lot of us!) years why we stay and it is becuase this is a nice community!

This is a very good narrative to help with making decision. I assume that one of the maintenance worker is a concealed thief and he got into your apartment.

I use to reside at Doral in 2003. Gary was one of the BEST maintance men I have ever encountered. The problem is is the others. There is one other guy who use to work with Gary that was a good one. My oppinion on your situation is it was someone that has frequently visited (repair wise besides GARY)your place of residence. Trust me, when I was there, I have seen a few stragglers (other maintanence) linger around on days I was off. I have also encountered one that turned my door knob and thought I wasn't home. They didn't have a key but they checked to see if I left my door unlocked (Do you think in that neighborhood I would leave MY DOOR UNLOCKED??) Come on now!. He no longer worked there after I complained. I lived in one of the quiet buildings directly in the front. If you decide to move around Doral, the front was my first choice in my first apt. search. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Nice, affordable ( $740 at the time I moved in: 3rd floor 2br), spacious and NO ROACHES. I can't speak for the other buildings but mine was one of the cleanest!!!

Dear Translocust,
Nice job Malcolm. This sounds like something you would do. I know that Doral is running itself into the ground. The smart thing for them to do is to fix the place up the right way, instead of having the illegal alliens doing it for cheap. They are usually doing a quick-fix. I visit the area every weekday, family friend still lives there, and I see this one cleaning lady that does nothing. She has her cleaning materials, but she's sitting on her ass in the building (I'm guessing she's waiting for time to pass, and make it seem as though she's cleaning). Doral is getting what they pay for. They don't want to pay for the upkeep of the property, they are losing money. I've noticed so many vacant units, and they don't even try to fix them up.

This is to the first response of this post. Maintenance would definitley come into your apartment without notifying you, sometimes wouldnt even leave a note saying they were in your apartment. I had to call the rental office about this happening to me. But as usual, oh maintenance can do that. They dont have to inform you that they need to come into your apartment, due to letting you know they turned your water back on or off.
