Definitely Going downhill.

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006

I lived in these apartments for over two years. The beautiful, well-kept grounds caught my attention; the courteous and polite staff (at that time) earned my business.

...That was before the property management changed hands, twice.

There are two sections of buildings, the old and the new. Our first apartment here was a two bedroom in the newer section-- quite nice. We had no problems; our neighbors were decent and the apartment itself was hassle-free. The neighborhood was nice: a quick walk to the Safeway, a nice residential area nearby for an afternoon stroll.

Then we moved into our second apartment, a three bedroom in the older section. The next two years of our time spent in the Apartments at Sunset saw everything getting steadily worse.

Our new upstairs neighbors let their ill-behaved children make no end of noise, shrieking and screaming and running as late as midnight. When called on it, they insisted /I/ was the one lying, and their angel children went to bed every night at nine! ...Yeah, right.

The neighborhood, in my opinion, is still nice. Things are well-lit, and I personally never felt unsafe. I was disappointed at the office's treatment of a crime that occurred in 2006 (basically, "Bad things happen. You guys are on your own!"), but it wasn't the sort of violence that I felt affected me personally.

The new management is devoid of personality, in spite of my best attempts to be communicative with them. Often I have been made to feel foolish, unreasonable, and ungrateful, for making simple requests or actually asking them to do their jobs. One question asked multiple times would get me multiple different answers, none of which would be backed up with any kind of facts.

The older buildings are falling apart-- oven door falling off, outlets falling out of walls, caulking falling off of the sinks, and everything painted over so many times that counters and walls are actually sticky with paint. The outlets are so unstable that plugs have to be propped certain ways in order to work. A fire hazard if I ever saw one.

Maintenance was routinely slow with responding to requests. The development of the "call center" was a joke. Imagine trying to return a call to someone in the office and getting the call center, who of course have no idea who you are or why you're calling. No better than trying to contact a large, impersonal phone company!

I haven't yet mentioned the heating noise. For whatever reason, a loose, ungrounded pipe attached to the outside air conditioning units (right by our windows) would make a rattling noise whenever the unit turned on. An unbelievably loud, continuous, tooth-jarring rattling noise. Maintenance took six months to actually acknowledge we had a problem, and never actually succeeded in fixing it. We bought earplugs, stuffed pillows over our ears, you name it. Simply unbearable.

I realize that some of my difficulties with this place were unique to my situation. The grounds are still quite beautiful. The layouts of the buildings are appealing; floor-to-ceiling windows let in lots of light. (Watch out for those heating bills, though!) Parking was never a problem for us-- three cars, and always able to park not too far from our front door.

I would still even recommend this place to a friend or coworker. The location is nice, not far from downtown, simple to hop on 15 to 70 or 270. Being able to walk to the Greek Festival right up the street at Sts. Peter & Paul is a plus, if you like good Greek food!

But I would amend that recommendation with a caveat: the office is really only around to collect your rent check; there's no guarantee they actually care about you as a customer. (Once the management changed, I certainly felt that attitude shift.) If the location is to your taste, then go for it! And keep in mind that the quality varies from apartment to apartment-- if you can, look specifically at the unit you want to rent and see if it's in a livable condition.
