I miss this place

hi hi. i used to live here when it was "Oakwood." I grew up here, i mean literally, from when i was born to when i entered middle school. so this review is going to apply mostly to the construction of the property and not so much the management because obviously, they have changed! My family moved in when it was first constructed. i loved the amneities! they have several tennis courts, a nice little pond (not counting the one at RIO), bunches of playgrounds (fantastic for children - they even had a giant sand box at one point ^_^), gardens with benches, gazeebos and fountains and nice landscaping, gym, jacuzzi, 2 sweet pools and well, tons of stuff. the apartments themselves are rather small, i went to lots of my friend's houses in the neighborhood and i saw all the floor plans, nothing large. but i still think the quality was nice. we lived in a 2 bedroom and my bedroom had the biggest walk in closet! i used it as a playroom, with a dry erase board, lots of shelving, a dance floor and of course i even had room for my clothes. the bathrooms are in the bedrooms so that makes it all very convenient. the stoves are electric though so it makes the electric bill a nightmare i do remember that. there used to be nice wildlife, bunnies and the like strolling around the parks but i think after they tore up the wood area and built that target/kohls shopping center it might have drove them out.
oh yeah, they have tons of shops around and they keep building more! it all started with Rio, which i will admit used to be better when they had SportLand but now it is just restaurants and a mediocre movie theater. but as promised when we moved in (although it took 10 years) they built many more including a Barnes and Noble, nice family restaurants, bakery, ice scream shop, photo studio and more. they even added more apartments and townhouses down the street. i think its only a matter of time (sad to say) until they buy out that farm across the street and build another strip mall there.......oh and the ride on bus has stops throughout the neighborhood and you have more shopping centers like the one with the Giant.
we never had roaches but one time i found a millepede in our bath tub!!!! it came from the drain hole, it was gross. but the most traumatizing thing that i had to face living there was the slug infestation!!!! everywhere you go there are slugs and in the winter they freeze on the sidewalk, i don't know why but its more than i've seen anywhere else.
they had a lot of community events when i lived there too. bingo every wednesday with great prizes, a teen hangout thing every friday in the club house. they also had a nice shuttle, more convenience as if they didn't have enough already!
maintenance was great, every morning there was an army of people making the place beautiful. the flowers they would plant were exquisite! they even had a maid service you could order (for extra $$$) that worked with the company so i bet they had decent rates.
neighbors were nice, it was the kind of place where you could just talk to people. i knew most of the people on my block, not just the kids either. the parents were good at keeping a watchful eye on not only their own kids but the others that were around. its nice to know the people around you have your back.
great schools for your kids if you move here, 150%
the reason we left though was management. they were awful, they were the type that preferred to leave nasty letters taped to your door (not even in an envelope!) than talk to you in person. the rent increases were ridiculous (and from what i read they still are!) and my parents were sick of it. that and we wanted a bigger place. its sad though that management basically pushed us out of a great place with their bogus charges and protocol. i understand it is a business but it is also a place people call home. most of my friends in the neighborhood ended up moving out after 2 or 3 years because of all the rent increases. i still go back to visit, i even give my college friends the grande ol' tour of the place i grew up and they are always impressed. but i was a child, i only saw the fun side, my parents on the other hand bore the financial burden and despite all of its offerings, always associate Oakwood with bad feelings.
while i know much has probably changed, many of the current mishaps can be read in the other reviews;however, mine offers a perspective not many other's can give! ^_
Good luck on your search!
