On Tuesday evening I arrived to my home to find the front door locked-up; both the dead bolt and bottom lock were lock. I live in a third floor apartment at the Watkins Station Apartments in Gaithersburg, Maryland. My sliding glass door was locked. There was no force entry, however; my apartment was ransacked and all valuables, banks and cash were stolen from the bedroom areas. I am a single mother. A hard-working mother of one. I do not expect this type of situation to arise when I leave my home locked while leaving for work in the morning.
There was no forced entry into the apartment which means that someone has the key to my place . . .

OR!!!! Does someone in the inside have the key to many of apartments in the community'

The complex is managed by Sawyer Realty Holdings located in College Park, Maryland. Sawyer notified me that the community is being bought by the Montgomery County Housing Opportunity Commission (HOC). They sent notices out to each tenant informing them that between August 7 - August 8 inspectors/investigators from HOC would be inspecting each unit. I have spoken to several tenants after the robbery on Tuesday who received notices stating they broke their lease because the leasing office does not have keys to their apartments. Sawyer is blaming these tenants for changing their locks. Many of these tenants have had recent maintenance calls during the time of day when they are at work.
Maintenance were able to enter their apartments for maintenance calls in June, but now that it's time for the HOC inspection the rental office is sending notice out to tenants saying they have breached their lease because their keys are missing from the leasing office.
There were as many as 4 tenants in one building who received notices that the leasing office does not have a key to their apartment. There are two people in my building who received the notice, one being a former Montgomery County Police and a gun owner. And many others who have informed me of receiving the same notices.

I spoke to Nancy Torres, the resident manager and explained my situation. She told me that in order for me to break my month to month lease I would have to give a sixty day notice. As I said before, I along with many of the other tenants, no longer feel safe knowing that the leasing office has failed to place such valuable keys in a secure location. It's scary to know that the only reason the leasing office even noticed the keys were missing is because the inspectors needed a key to each unit.

I no longer feel safe in my unit and would like to vacate my residence immediately. It's scary to think that someone, maybe on the inside, has been stealing the keys to apartments. I own a dog (three-legged) who is tied in my kitchen during the day. She never ruins anything in the apartment and is fully house trained. Tuesday she ripped the linoleum up from the kitchen floors, and chewed the wood from around the base boards in an attempt to free herself from the tie-out to protect the house.

My daughter (four years old) is now scared to death to be in any room of the house alone. Other tenants are scared to leave the house for work.
And I am stuck in my unit with a scared child for another 60 days.

FROM MY DAUGHTER, THE CONCERNED TENANTS - Can someone find out who has stolen/misplaced/borrowed so many keys from the leasing office'

This memo has been forwarded to Landlord Tenant Affairs, 7 On Your Side, Montgomery County Housing/Landlord Tenant and my attorney.

I would like to correct the Manager's name used and referenced. Nancy Torres is not the community manager at Watkins Station. Resident has been speaking to Marta Paredes.

What this person refused to note or mentioned was that she had lost her apartment keys the weekend prior to her supposed incident. I would think management is NOT responsible for her carelessness. We all need to take responsibility of our own safety, why blame it on the poor management staff, who are only doing thier job. I have been a resident of Watkins Station for the past 3 years and I have never encounter any problems. All of my concerns have been addressed promptly and I can say I AM A HAPPY CUSTOMER. It is unfair how someone can blame others for thier own mistakes. No one has stolen any keys, the staff has work there for many years and this incident NOW arises. If she wanted to move out so desperately why not handle it with management first. Get your facts straigth, before blaming others. I recommend Watkins Station to anyone who is looking for a affordable and comfortable home environment, plus the ammenities are great. Check out thier fitness center, club room, tennis court and they have plenty of parking space.

To the previous post -

How do you know she lost her keys the weekend prior to the break-in? You know an awful lot about this situation for just being a resident there.

Actually, you sound like management to me. Who else would bother to defend an apartment complex to this extent?

The plug for the 'great ammenites' was a nice touch. Real smooth.
