Actually it is a shame, because otherwise it isn't all that bad. But the staff makes it a living hell. BEWARE. Do NOT live here. You WILL have to deal with these maniacs at some point, and you will regret it. I have a 3 page letter that I'm sending to their corporate office as well as the Montgomery County Housing Commission, and even that doesn't begin to address all of the issues. I'll name some of the most recent here so that hopefully I can save someone the agony of having to live here. 1) You can't leave. I went on a business trip a month ago and came back on a Thursday evening with threats that my car, which I left in the lot, would be towed by 8AM Friday morning at MY OWN EXPENSE if I did not move it. They didn't call me, they didn't even mail a notice - they left a crumpled piece of paper next to my door (not on, next to!) Imagine if I had come home Friday! I would have had to sue them!! Because a crumpled piece of paper left a couple days before is NOT adequate notification for something like that - they should know better, but they don't. They believe that all rental laws in Maryland are there to protect THEM, not the tenants. 2) Even though I have never been so much as a day late on my rent, I recieved a nasty letter full of legal threats from the management a few weeks ago stating that if rent is not paid on the first, on the second they will file charges against you. They sent the letter to everyone, but that was my problem - why make your GOOD tenants feel like crap when you are trying to target a select few' Because they are too lazy to target the select few, and they don't care about their long term tenants, which brings me to 3) The rent increase, while I'm sure they can justify it legally with all of the absolutely unnecessary, unrequested maintenence they did over the year, is absurd. It also brings my rent to more than $100 over the RENT THEY ARE OFFERING FOR NEW TENANTS FOR THE SAME APARTMENT!! Maybe I should move in with family for a month and then move back in'' Haha, no, I'm just going to move out. The rent they are now asking me is significantly higher not only than their own intro rate, but higher than the current MARKET rate in that area. I'm not going to spend more than 1,000 more a year just for the conveinence of not moving. They gave me less than 24 hours to decide if we want to renew or not, and we don't want to be bullied into renewing so we're just going to leave. This place is not worth another year of headaches. Oh, and when I called them to discuss the new lease (as requested in the notice they sent me, 24 hours before they wanted an answer), and asked about why the rent for new tenants is significantly lower, they didn't call back. They do not do their job. I see them sitting in there - they are lazy, unmotivated and probably underpaid - which tells me to avoid Equity Residential in general. Don't expect smiles from this office! They almost seem to resent it when you come down to ask why they haven't returned phone calls (which, by the way, they NEVER do!!)
I really hope this helps someone from making the same mistake I did!!!!

I totally feel your pain I just went threw some Bull Sh** with them as well. And I got much better results out of them after we went to corporate. I definitely advise you to contact corporate about them and i would attach the reviews from this site and send it to corporate. Contact Robert Grant. He???s a really cool guy and you'll get answers out of him.

My friend, I am here to write a review about that staff, but your posting describes exactly what I have been dealing with at Canterbury. The worst one is a piece of paper attached to my door this Saturday November the 3rd treating me to pay a complementary rent amount (less than $25) with the inscription ???Please pay by the 5th to avoid court procedures???. I always pay rent before the due date. I never receive an invoice (or call) about this amount which they said is a result of changing in rent. I would NOT recommend Canterbury for anybody.

Guys, I am in the same boat. I got some notice on the 2nd about owing them $3.46! The rent had been paid and everything. I raised hell in the office and told some prospective tenants to please look elsewhere. This place sucks.

yup thanks for the follow up comments everyone. I am long gone and in a condo in Rockville now.... right off Rockville pike, walking distance to the metro, and (considering utilities are included in this place), I am paying LESS than I would be if I'd stayed at canterbury.
If you all are still in, get out, you can do a lot better!
