I agree with another reviewer that this is basically low(er) income housing. I should have known better when I got a low price, however it still wasn't worth the price. Kids are constantly running around the parking lot, throwing footballs around, watching it bounce off of cars, loitering, etc. I generally just go up to my apartment and keep to myself to avoid the dirty looks from my neighbors. My next door neighbor leaves a bunch of crap out in the hallway, and it's pretty much an eyesore. I don't think I'll get shot or anything, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got harassed walking around at night.

The interior of the apartment is pretty average, with dated fixtures and diffucult closet doors. The kitchen is pretty bad, with a lot of damage to the countertops, etc.

No complaints about the staff. Generally friendly and helpful.

One major problem that I continued to have were animals in my ceiling. I live on the top floor and constantly hear "critters" crawling around (they drove my cat crazy). Maintenance personnel responded to the complaints and "took care of the problem" however it always seemed that the squirrels would come back. One night, there was something much larger than a squirrel in the ceiling (a raccoon, perhaps) and I could hear it sniffing around. Pretty bad. This must violate *some* code, but I'm not sure. I didn't think it would be too difficult to eliminate the route of entry into the roof, but apparently it's quite a task.

Yeah, I can't wait to move. I got this place in an effort to save some cash, but I completely regret going on the cheap. Montgomery County is a pretty expensive place to live, and this is probably one of the more affordable options, but you get what you pay for.

The only response I have is that if someone really believes that this is "low income" housing, they don't have any idea of what low income really is and that certainly have never lived in bona fide low income housing.

In response to Anonymous's 12/11/08 response: I have also lived in Canterbury and hated it! Not the worst place I've lived in terms of interior quality...definitely worst in terms of customer service and neighborhood though. My only qualm with your response is that just because someone has never lived in "true" low-income housing, does not mean his or her Canterbury living situation was not crap. Going from the sewer to the gutter does not qualify as luxury living.

The part about having a critter in the ceiling reminded me of my experience at Canterbury. We lived on the top floor, too, and we had that problem. We called maintenance and asked them to take care of the issue, which I think they did, but then, six weeks later, another critter was back living there. Not sure if it was a squirrel, bats, raccoon . . . I have no idea. Sometimes there were more than one and you could hear them fighting. I'll tell you this -- it makes you feel gross knowing that you're living underneath the nest and possible fecal matter of some kind of pest like that. In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if you got our old apartment. We were near the rental office, so we didn't experience much in the way of kids playing and dangerous neighbors, but people in my building constantly left their trash out in front of their doors, even though it was less than 30 steps to the dumpsters, and I'm positive that's what attracted the attic critters to my building. We complained to the rental office almost weekly, but they were never willing to do anything about it. I'm sorry you got stuck with such a crappy apartment. Hope things make a big turnaround for you.

I told them about it three times. Each time they sent someone out fairly promptly and the animals were gone for a week or so, but then they always came back. I eventually got tired of calling and got used to noises. It was sort of like the animals became part of the family. Thanks for noting my typos. I didn't actually think it was Montgomery "Country." That would just be ridiculous.

Did you ever ask your leasing office how animals get in the "ceiling?" Its county not country.

I'm thinking about leasing in October 2009; can anyone give me their honest opinion on the community? Breaking and entering? Car theft? theft from vehicles? thanks

Been living in Canterbury for 4 yrs now. about..... "can anyone give me their honest opinion on the community? Breaking and entering? Car theft? theft from vehicles?" I'd say about ever 2-3 months you get a letter from the main office about break-ins, car vandalism, and theft from vehicles. The apartment community is big, so it??s not like it happens in front of your apartment on a regular basis but it happens. I'd say 15% of the apartment complex is set aside for SEC 8 housing and 5% is set aside for police. Parents generally let their kids roam the complex unattended, and kids will be kids, so there's sometimes an issue with that. A lot of people have dogs (all of them seem very friendly). You have to realize there are about 700 families living in this complex so you??re always going to have your bad apples and problems, but with that, I have people that live next to me that have become friends and we hang out too. These are not houses, so you will have to deal with noise, people hanging outside to all hours of the night, ECT... (Not all the time, but it will happen). Maintenance staff is great, ever an issues it??s usually fixed the next day. If I had to rate this out of 5 I give it a 2.7 . ONE IMPORTANT FACT! YOUR ELECTRIC BILL WILL BE HIGH! EVERY ONES IS! THESE APARTMENTS ARE VERY ENERGY INEFFICIENT IN THE WINTER, PLAN ON A $200.00 BILL FOR AT LEAST 5 OF THE WINTER MONTHS(summers not bad, its like $65.00). ASK ANY RESIDENT GOING INTO THE LEASING OFFICE WHEN YOUR TAKING A LOOK AT THE APARTMENTS. PLAN FOR IT!
