Pretty Good for the Money by Local Standards

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2007
BACKGROUND: I've lived here since 2001, and found this to be an adequate place to live. Of course, so much depends on one's neighbors, and I have been fortunate to have very quiet ones.
GOOD STUFF: The apartment management takes quick action against anyone who is bothering other residents. Maintenance people have always responded to any requests for service within 24 hours, have been scrupulously honest, and seem genuinely eager to be of service. People complain about parking, but there is always parking - you may have to walk a little, but never more than about 75 yards, and usually much less. The grounds are well groomed. I've had no problems with serious vermin such as rats, mice or roaches. Common areas (stairwells, laundry areas) are kept clean. I feel safe here - no problems walking in the common areas at night. I've not heard of apartments being broken into, or any violent crimes. There have occasionally been reports of cars being broken into, but nothing frequent or recent. The children's play area, pool, and picnic area are clean, inviting, and kept up. The children who live here seem well behaved overall - respectful of the adults, and certainly I've seen no problem with them vandalizing the property or cars. Management is helpful and friendly. Laundry facilities are well maintained. Residents are nearly all nice people. The apartment managers give little candy gifts on birthdays, and hold "resident appreciation days" from time to time with free car washes or donuts.
BAD STUFF: Bathroom and kitchen fixtures and appliances are showing their age (1960s vintage). In my basement apartment, I can expect yearly seasonal invasions of ants, ground crickets and cave crickets. Management is responding to parking complaints with -----like efficiency. If you have a guest overnight, and she forgets to put the parking pass on, expect a $200 tow fee, and you had better have $200 CASH on hand, or it goes up from there. In all, I have paid $275 for towing fees since being here (once my gf and I forgot to put the visitor pass on her car, and once I stopped the tow guy while he was still here - $75 "drop fee.") Rents increase each year, and are comparable to other similar apartments. This place is no rip-off, but neither is it a bargain. The many notes from the apartment managers placed on our doors are sometimes somewhat abrasive and authoratarian. No dishwashers, and no washer/dryer in the apartment resident units (though they are conveniently located within the apartment buildings). I can hear my upstairs neighbor at night when he snores. Not bothersome, but that indicates the lack of soundproofing between floors. There is no convenient way to handle outgoing mail here - no mail box on site. Storage space is pretty scarce - closets are few and small, and the auxiliary storage units in the laundry room are handy, but compact.
OVERALL: This is a safe, clean, mostly well-run place. Apartments in Maryland are expensive, and this one is too. A lot of your experience here will depend on the courtasy of your neighbors.
